World of Warcraftis currently working on Dragonflight, its ninth expansion pack. The new release recently entered alpha testing, granting players a first look behind the development curtain. In addition to new systems, UI overhauls, and character options,World of Warcraftis adding zones, dungeons, raids, and a new chapter of Azeroth’s ever-developing story.

Of course, a new story would be nothing without its cast of characters.World of Warcrafthas hundreds of characters from 30 years of history across games, books, and comics. There is a robust selection of dragons inWarcraft’spast who would be perfect additions for Dragonflight alongside the likes of Wrathion, Alexstrasza, and Kalecgos.

The Consorts of the Dragonflight Aspects

Theoriginal five Dragon Aspects ofWorld of Warcraft- Alexstrasza, Malygos, Neltharion, Nozdormu, and Ysera - each had several consorts as lovers, advisors, and companions. While most of the named consorts have met unfortunate ends, a couple still live.

Soridormi, prime consort of Nozdormu, currently possesses two of the few remaining vials from the original Well of Eternity. Nozdormu is still alive, and their dynamic could be very compelling, especially if theMurozond storyline is explored further in Dragonflight. Haleh, the last consort of Malygos, currently watches over Mazthoril, a Blue dragonflight roost in Winterspring. Though Malygos is gone, her fellow consort Sindragosa appears as an arcane simulacrum. Both could help guide Kalecgos as he takes up the mantle of the Blue Aspect.

Dragonflight has shown it will be exploring long-dead characters like Sindragosa, so it could do the same with others. Ysera’s former consort Eranikus and Alexstrasza’s former consorts Korialstrasz and Tyranastrasz could be similarly featured. Likewise, Deathwing’s former prime consort, Sinestra, could return. Also known as Sintharia, themad dragon is the mother of Onyxiaand Nefarian, and created the Twilight dragonflight. Though she has seemingly died twice already, the Twilight dragon Zeryxia claimed to hear Sinestra’s whispers from beyond the grave during Legion, meaning she may not be gone for good.

The Dragonflight Scions

Classic World of Warcraftintroduced the eldest children of the original Dragon Aspectsduring the Ahn’Qiraj raid. While Ysera’s daughter, Merithra, is confirmed to appear in Dragonflight as the leader of the Green dragonflight, Nozdormu’s son Anachronos should as well. Though he has shown up in various places throughoutWorld of Warcraft, Anachronos was last seen in Battle for Azeroth, where he helped Horde players return to Alternate Draenor to recruit the Mag’har orcs as an allied race.

Caelestrasz and Arygos, the scions of the Red and Blue dragonflights, respectively, are both gone. Caelestraszfell battling Sinestra during Cataclysm, and Arygos after he joined Deathwing and was betrayed by the Twilight’s Hammer. However, since both of their mothers - Alexstrasza and Sindragosa - play roles in Dragonflight, players could still learn more about them posthumously.

Tyrygosa and the Netherwing Dragonflight

TheNetherwing dragonflight were first explored in Burning Crusade. These otherworldly dragons came from a clutch of Black dragon eggs hidden by Deathwing on Draenor before it became Outland. During the expansion, players aid the patriarch and matriarch of the flight, Neltharaku and Karynaku, and their eldest son, Mordenaku. Additionally, a Blue dragon by the name of Tyrygosa has a history intrinsically tied to the Netherwing dragonflight.

Before Burning Crusade and later Cataclysm, Tyrygosa appeared in theSunwell Trilogycomics. During the comics, she grew fond of the Netherwing dragonflight and sought to help them. She and Kalecgos also have a deep connection: they were promised to each other as mates, though Kalegos later ended the relationship. Now that Kalecgos is taking a prominent role as the Blue Aspect, Tyrygosa’s return would be perfectly timed.

The Netherwing dragonflight should play a role in Dragonflight as well. They are not an officialWorld of Warcraftdragonflight like the main five, and lack a place in their hierarchy. Their return could provide an interesting political situation for the Aspects, who would be forced to figure out what to do with these new dragons - especially if Tyrygosa was there to negotiate on their behalf.

Pseudo-Dragons

World of Warcrafthas several dragon-like creatures who don’t fit the mold of the five dragonflights. The cloud serpentsfrom Mists of Pandariaare one such group. Yu’lon, the Jade Serpent and August Celestial, is the strongest of their kind. Though not a true dragon, she possesses the power and wisdom of the Aspects, as well as an intrinsic connection to the Titans.

The storm drakes of Stormheim are another such faction of dragons. These dragons are allied with Titan Keeper Odyn, but have a connection to the elements like the antagonistic Primalists from Dragonflight. If major storm drakes like Nitthogg, Thrymjaris, or Vethir were to appear, their connection with the dragons, titans, and elements could be explored further.

The faerie dragons could also be fun to see in Dragonflight. These tricksy little dragons have a connection to the Emerald Dream like the Green dragonflight. Brightwing is a notorious example of their kind, and hasappeared inHeroes of the StormandHearthstone. All of these dragon-adjacent factions could be an opportunity forWorld of Warcraftto explore what defines a dragon.

World of Warcraft’s Fan-Favorite Dragons

There are dozens of other dragons who could make compelling characters to add in Dragonflight. Zaladormu is a Bronze dragon who appeared briefly in the Burning Crusade questline for Children’s Week. During the quest, the dragon intercedes on behalf of Salandria and Dornaa - a blood elf and draenei orphan - when a group of Bronze wardens attempt to harm them for “things [they] might do or fail to do in the future.” Now that Salandria has appeared in the recentBlood Elf Heritage Armor questline inWorld of Warcraft, Zaladormu’s return could allow players to uncover the context of that cryptic scene.

Rheastrasza was the Red dragon responsible for the birth of Wrathion - the uncorrupted Black dragon who now seeks to lead his defunct flight. Though her motives were pure, Rheastrasza did some questionable things to purify Wrathion’s egg. Rheastrasza ultimately met her death at Deathwing’s claw, but expanding her character through Wrathion could provide some interesting lore about the Red dragonflight.

The eccentric Azuregos, Valithria Dreamwalker from Icecrown Citadel, Ambassador Itharius and Majordomo Torastrasza from Wyrmrest Temple, and Sapphiron from Naxxramas are just a few others who could beexplored further in Dragonflight. Though players won’t know if these characters will appear in Dragonflightor its subsequent patches until its release,World of Warcraftfans can speculate until then.

World of Warcraftis available now on PC. The Dragonflightexpansion is set to launch later this year.
