The Core Details of Asssassin’s Creed Invictus

The announcement ofAssassin’s Creed Invictusactually came after the spate of franchise announcements at September’s Ubisoft Forward Event, which officially confirmed the likes ofAssassin’s Creed Mirageand the long-awaitedJapanese-setAssassin’s Creed Red.Invictusappears to be a smaller-scale project due to its post-event announcement, or at the very least one that is set to release a lot further down the line.

The only solid information that Ubisoft has revealed regardingAssassin’s Creed Invictusis that it is a solely multiplayer-focused title, which sets the project apart quite significantly from the many other announcements for the franchise. It is currently unclear as to how this multiplayer will take shape, but many are already proposing that it will be aiming to recapture thepopular multiplayer formula thatAssassin’s Creedhas historically possessed.

Beginning withAssassin’s Creed Brotherhood, manyACinstallments had comprehensive PvP online modes, which saw players go head-to-head in a small-scale environment. Having to blend in with NPCs and utilize a spate of abilities, these online modes would usually see a player be assigned a specific opponent to hunt down and kill, all while avoiding their very own hunter. This form ofAssassin’s Creedmultiplayer proved to be a hit with fans, although it has sadly fallen to the wayside in the franchise’s priorities with most of its more contemporary releases. While the likes ofAssassin’s Creed Unityfeatured co-operative PvE multiplayer, it seems that fans are most excited at the prospect ofInvictusbringing back the series' classic head-to-head online modes.

The Meaning of Assassin’s Creed Invictus

It is important to note that, like many of the new projects that will make up the future of theAssassin’s Creedfranchise,Invictusis currently just a codename for this specific title, and will likely change once the game draws closer to its official release. However, these codenames often loosely tie to some key information of the game in question, withAssassin’s Creed Mirage’soriginal codename ofRifthinting at the personality rift in its protagonist,Basim Ibn Ishaq.

The word invictus is Latin for “unconquered,” which may indicate that the game is set some time during the Roman Empire’s reign. Additionally, the term invictus is most often associated with a poem of the same name written by Victorian poet William Ernest Henley. Henley wrote the poem about his defiant spirit during his recovery from a leg amputation that he received at 16, and it has become a term often associated with perseverance among those with disabilities, as evident in the bi-annual Invictus Games.

Roman and Victorian themes are no stranger to theAssassin’s Creedfranchise, with 2015’sAssassin’s Creed Syndicatebeing majorly set within Victorian England. While it is still of course conjecture as to what setting or core gameplayInvictuswill possess, a deeper contextual understanding of the title’s codename offers some insight into what some of the possibilities could be.
