While Valve’s game output isn’t as big as it was in the mid-2000s, the developer has plenty of IPs that are still beloved to this day. This includes the seminal first-person puzzle gamePortal, where players face several tests from Aperture Science’s deadly computer villain GLaDOS and enjoy some witty writing and black comedy that tie the whole thing together. Interest in the franchise has been maintained through a variety of mods and fan made creations, such as ademake ofPortalfor the N64, or in the case of one fan, a remake built within Unreal Engine.
This is not the first time that fans have tried remaking the game in a different engine. There have been a few different artistic reinterpretations ofhowPortalwould look like in Unreal Engine 5, showing how far gaming visuals have come in the past two decades. On the subreddit r/unrealengine, one fan showed off how they recreated the aesthetics and functions of the first Portal game in a short gameplay video clip.

ThisUnreal Engine remakewas created by u/DeDelner, who calls the project Unreal Portal. The gameplay clip shows off a brief puzzle that doesn’t seem to be based on a specific puzzle from the original game, instead being one of the user’s original creations. This is evident with DeDelner’s username appearing underneath the Chamber sign. This puzzle requires using a portal to escape from the bottom of a pit while also needing to hit a button and get to a door before it closes.
The visuals of thisPortalremake give the game a more realistic aesthetic, such as the portal gun having a small bit of paint being chipped off of the metal, along with wear and tear being present on the doors and walls. When the gun is fired, the portal beams have a more particle laden look to it, along with the rings that create the titular portals. The end of the video even shows a unique title screen for the fan remake, with the companion cube also rendered in a more realistic style.
According to DeDelner, all the assets made for thisPortalremake were handmade, with none of the original source engine assets being converted. According to them, it required the usage of Blender, GCFScape, VTFEdit, and Crowbar. Many fans were impressed with this remake, along with theportal gun implementation, and the post has managed to bring in over 400 upvotes thus far.
Portalis available on Mobile, PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Switch via theCompanion Collection.
