The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon spinoff featuring Norman Reedus will tell a new story. Director and executive producer Greg Nicotero promised this to fans in the face of franchise fatigue.

If fans were worried about getting their zombie fix, AMC announced three new spinoffs starring some of the franchise’s most beloved characters. These spinoffs includeDead City, an unnamed series starring Rick and Michonne, andThe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.

With so many seasons ofThe Walking Deadcontent, many worry that fans will burn out and lose their taste for zombie storytelling. However, Nicotero promises fans are in for something they haven’t seen before withinThe Walking Deaduniverse. The show is being hailed as the closest to a standalone show any spinoffs get. “The goal isn’t just to see Daryl in exotic and new locations, but to explore a wholly different world,” Nicotero said toEntertainment Weekly.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixonsees arguably the show’s most popular character mysteriously wash ashore in France. The new show will follow Daryl as he tries to learn how he ended up in Europe, with actor Reedus hinting that he didn’t get there voluntarily. Daryl struggles to find a way back to America, but the relationships he develops with the resilient French survivors hamper his plans.
The formula of moving the location ofThe Walking Deadmay seem familiar because fans have seen it before. Fans have watched tales of survival set in the woods of Georgia, a Nebraskan university, the sunny streets of Los Angeles and Mexico, and several other locations. Although fans may have initially rolled their eyes at what seems to be thelatest attempt to continue theWalking Deadfranchiseby changing a minor detail like the setting, Nicotero promises that’s not the case.
While it remains to be seen if Nicotero, Reedus, and the rest ofthe Walking Dead: Daryl Dixoncrew can make good on the promise of rejuvenated content, many fans are hopeful. Nicotero has drawn on Robert Heinlein’sStranger in a Strange Worldto shape Daryl’s exploration of apocalyptic France, which may give the series the freshness it hopes to bring to the franchise.
