With the franchise’s continuation in the form of the 100 Years Quest sequel, a few more highly intelligent characters have joined the fray. This list has been updated to reflect the intelligence of current and newly-introduced characters in the Fairy Tail franchise.
Magic
Requip Magic
As one of the guild’sfew S-class wizards,Erza Scarletis arguably the strongest mage in the entire guild. However, brute force and physical prowess aren’t Erza’s only strong suits, as she backs up her strength with strategic wits and intuition.
While she doesn’t have that many accounts of raw intelligence, Erza presents herself as a strategic fighter with multiple instances of quick-witted decisions that lead to a decisive victory. Throughout the series, Erza’s leadership qualities also shine through, an aspect of her character that further backs up her astute nature.

Aera, Transformation Magic
As a mere Exceed companion for Wendy, Carla is often overlooked in Fairy Tail. While she might not have much fighting power to offer, Carla could still back her friends with her intelligence and wits. At times, Carla is the only voice of reason within the series’ primary cast, as her intuition tends to be right on the mark.
Carla also inherited her mother’s power of receiving visions of the future. Such a power is already associated with high intelligence, showcasing the raw brain power this cat possesses. Combining these glimpses from the future with her wits, Carla becomes a major asset for Team Natsu as a whole.

WhileLucyis often viewed as an airhead, she shows considerable promise in terms of relying on her intuition to solve complex problems. From being the first to find Mavis’ grave on Tenrou Island to rewritingZeref’s book E.N.D, Lucy has proven her wits time and again.
Due to Lucy being the butt of every sensual joke inFairy Tail, viewers have formed an impression of her being a mere accessory to Team Natsu. However, Lucy has clearly cemented herself as one of the smartest members of the team through her intuition and quick thinking.

Eye Magic: Dark Ecriture
Fried Justinemight be a mere ancillary character, yet he has proven himself as one of the smartestmembers of Fairy Tail. As the leader of the Thunder God Tribe, Fried is an extremely powerful mage, though most of his power can be traced back to his high intellect.
Fried’s magic, Dark Ecriture, relies primarily on rune knowledge and magic linguistics, an extremely intricate form of wizardry. Considering he is already adept at casting runes, it’s safe to say that Fried boasts extremely high intelligence. Moreover, Fried was the key to Laxus’ Battle of Fairy Tail, with his runes being crucial to keeping the mages trapped inside Magnolia.

Letter Magic
Levy Mcgardenis a prominent background character among Fairy Tail’s ranks, and despite receiving minimal screen time, she has showcased nothing but raw intellect. As a bookworm and the guild’s librarian, Levy is acquainted with every single magic book out there.
Levy is also adept at understanding ancient magic and deciphering runes, as she was seen decoding Fried’s rune barriers during the Battle of Fairy Tail Arc. Levy is more than just a booksmart character, as she has several feats to back up her knowledge.

Green Magic
Being the founder of Fairy Tail and the current 4th Wizard Saint of Ishgar, it comes as no surprise that Warrod Sequen is one of the smartest characters inFairy Tail. Since Warrod has lived for over a century, he possesses sage-like wisdom that has aided the Fairy Tail guild and its endeavors.
Warrod may not have played a significant role inFairy Tail’soverall premise, yet he still holds considerable importance as the 4th Wizard Saint and current member of the newly-formed Ishgar Magic Council. With decades of experience and wisdom, Warrod now looks over the continent of Ishgar as a member of the Magic Council.
Giant Magic, Light Magic, Wind Magic
Makarov Dreyaris a highly underrated character among the guild’s ranks, and while he’s often discredited due to his old age, he has saved his guild members on multiple occasions. Makarov also holds the title of being one ofthe Wizard Saints of Ishgar, a moniker held by the ten strongest mages on the continent.
His feats, coupled with his position as Fairy Tail’s guild master, are enough to cement Makarov as an incredibly smart character. His decisions pertaining to the guild are almost always rooted in logic, be it his decision to disband the guild or to entrust the position of guild master to Erza.
Heavenly Body Magic
Jellal Fernandesis one of the few antagonists who found redemption in the series, and this villain-turned-hero has played a crucial role throughout the story. As a magic prodigy and a natural genius, Jellal has remained one of the Fairy Tail guild’s most pivotal informants, supporting the primary characters from the backdrop.
Even in his younger years, Jellal was able to spearheadthe Tower of Heaven’s construction, all while infiltrating the Magic Council as a Wizard Saint. Jellal’s deductions are always right on the mark, and his strategies often end up being the right course of action, showcasing his wits and intelligence.
Chain Magic, Bullet Magic, Sound Magic
Formerly known as Precht Gaebolg,Hadeswas one of the founding members of the Fairy Tail guild, later taking up the mantle of the second guild master. However, Hades was corrupted sometime after passing the title to Makarov, as he turned into a villain and formed the dark guild Grimoire Heart.
Hades possessed exceptional intelligence, as his research allowed him to trace the roots of magic and even create an infinite source of magic called Eternal Magic. He was also able to preserve Mavis’ body in theform of Lumen Histoire, along with uncovering many other secrets of the magic world. However, this knowledge ended up corrupting him, turning a sound genius into a ruthless villain.

As a Law Magic Dragon Slayer, Elefseria possesses knowledge of every single detail of the magic world. Moreover, he even taught himself Dragon Slayer Magic, a feat that no mage in existence has ever achieved. With such knowledge at his disposal. Elefseria is arguably one of the smartest humans in the entirety of Earthland, though he might have already ascended beyond mortality.
