8Teddie
A New Housemate and a Relatively Happy Ending
Teddie isa beloved character inPersona 4,and for good reason. His mascot appearance is downright adorable, and his journey throughout the game is heartwarming for players, as all he wants is to be accepted into society. After helping with the investigation and even developing his persona inside the bear costume, he sometimes feels doubts and tries to return to where he came from.
Unfortunately, this journey doesn’t come to fruition, but if the player successfully solves the mystery, Teddie can continue exploring the human world and reveal his true identity to the group, who end up accepting him. Despite everything, Teddie ends up with a happy ending, as he moves in with Yosuke after the events ofPersona 4

7Rise
A Darker Fate Than Most
Rise is a popular idol who quit her job and moved back to Yasoinaba inPersona 4,despite the recent string of murders in the town. While this raises questions, she’s happy to stay there and even ends up on the news. This concerns the investigation team as they believe she will be kidnapped, a fear which becomes a reality.
The team finds both her and her Shadow Self in the Velvet Room inPersona 4. Rise’s Shadow Self performs for them and attacks the party, but Teddie charges the Shadow, who then becomes Rise’s Persona, Himiko. Rise doesn’t have a long arc inPersona 4, butthe one she does have is mostly dark, even though she can engage in romance with the protagonist.

6Yosuke
Yosuke Unsuccessfully Tries To Form Friendships
Yosuke is a character with many similarities tothe protagonist inPersona 4,as the two are in the same class in school, and both lived in big cities prior to moving to Inaba. After several disastrous interactions with Chie and Saki, he is told about the Midnight Channel and accidentally manages to enter it successfully with Chie and Yu. Teddie forces the three out of the Channel, and the next day, it is revealed that Saki is dead.
To make things worse, Yosuke has a Shadow Self now and, despite denying it at first, he eventually accepts it. After this, the Shadow transforms into Yosuke’s Persona. After Nanoko’s death, the players response to Yosuke is vital to whether the True or Normal ending is accessed or not. Yosuke is an important character inPersona 4, and he struggles to socialize at the beginning of the game before going through a rollercoaster of emotions before the ending.

5Naoto
Naoto Becomes More Accepting of Herself
Naoto first appears as a man inPersona 4, as she is adetectivededicated to solving the local murders. Due to misogyny within the police force, she is forced to hide her gender and present as male even though she could be a role model for women. Once the first suspect is arrested, she becomes suspicious and manages to enter the Midnight Channel. When the investigation team finds her, she has a Shadow Self and is preparing to get surgery to transition.
However, Naoto isn’t driven by dysphoria to want to transition, but due to feeling ashamed of her sex and fear that it is holding her back. Once she accepts who she is, the Shadow Self becomes her Persona and Naoto helps the team solve the mystery. Naoto goes through a lot to present in a way that she feels will be taken more seriously, but at the end ofPersona 4,she is much happier in herself.

4Kanji
Kanji Fights An Internal Struggle
Kanji is another heartbreaking character inPersona 4,as he used to be ridiculed by his father for his hobbies, which could be seen as feminine interests. Because of this, he changes himself completely, forces himself to act more stereotypically masculine, and isolates himself from society. Kanji is sucked into the Midnight Channel, and the team finds him confronting his shadow.
Unlike other characters, he is a lot morereluctant to accept his Shadow Self, and refuses to do so, even begging the others to accept it for him. Eventually, though, he comes around, and his Shadow Self transforms into his Persona. Kanji struggles with who he is and does everything possible to attempt to escape it, but true toPersona 4, he accepts it in the end.

3Yu
You Determine Yu’s Fate
Yu isthe protagonist ofPersona4, and for that reason, his fate isn’t as neat as that of any of the other playable characters in the game. He does his best to solve the mysteries surrounding the town regardless of player choice, and gets sucked into the Midnight Channel early in the game to kick this off. He is well-liked by the investigation team as he heads it up for the most part and gets threatened for his actions but still continues trying to figure things out.
In both thenormal and true endings, Yu leaves the area after bidding goodbye to all of his friends. In the bad ending, the player accepts the murder option at the end of the game, which leaves Yu’s fate hanging in the balance. Ultimately, it’s the decisions made by the player that determine the trajectory of Yu’s life following the events ofPersona 4.

2Chie
Chie Learns A Hard Truth About Childhood Dreams and Reality
Chie is a fan favorite inPersona 4due to her bubbly and excited personality and her arc in the narrative. She is one of the earliest characters to befriend the protagonist, and throughout most of the game her only real goal is to be helpful and solve the mystery. After getting sucked into the Midnight Channel, she wants the team to involve the police as she has a lot of respect for the force. Her Shadow Self allows her to accept the fact that her friendship with Yosuke mostly exists to help her do things, and then the team can finally move forward with the investigation.
Chie’s story ends with her childhood dream of joining the police being shattered, as the police force aren’t the paragons of justice that she once believed them to be. Although she has a lighter story arc overall inPersona 4,she still experiences profound disappointment by the end.

1Yukiko
Yukiko Struggles With Expectations
Yukiko is another beloved character inPersona 4who struggles heavily through the game, as she feels forced to play the role her parents set out for her. She often skips class to get back home to her family business, where she is going to become the next manager. This is a lot for anyone to handle, especially a young person like Yukiko. She vanishes after appearing on TV, and it turns out that she’s been sucked into the Midnight Channel. Shadow Yukiko gets into an altercation with Shadow Chie before flirting with the protagonist, and claims that Yukiko wants a way of getting out of her inheritance.
Once the truth is accepted, the Shadow becomes Yukiko’s Persona and, as a consequence of the incident, Yukiko comes out of her shell and is much more lively. When the protagonist leaves Inaba, she is the first one to speak, wishing him farewell and endingPersona 4with a pleasant touch.
