The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomproducer Eiji Aonuma states that he’d be interested in an adaptation of the series onto the big screen. Nintendo’s had an impressive 2023 so far with two of its most recognizable IPs. There was thebox office-breaking success of theSuper Mario Bros. Moviealong with fans finally seeing the highly anticipated release ofTears of the Kingdomafter years of delays and teasing.Tears of the Kingdomis already a critical darling, seeing the same positive reception thatBreath of the Wildlaid the groundwork for half a decade earlier. With both seeing massive success within roughly the same timeframe, there might be some that are craving to see the iconic franchise take to the big screen.

The Legend of Zeldahaving its own theatrical film has been a dreammany fans have wanted for years, roughly around the same amount of time thatMariofans have been waiting for a movie. Years of the infamous “video game movie curse” have clipped its chances for quite a while, and it wasn’t until recently that video game movies have broken away from that perception with films likeDetective PikachuandSonic the Hedgehog (2020). With Nintendo’s box office blockbuster with theMariomovie, Aonuma was asked if he’d be interested in a film based onZelda, to which he stated it needed to be under the right circumstances.

In an interview between theTears of the Kingdomproducer and Polygon, Aonuma was asked if the recent success of theMariomovie had gotten him excited to do aZelda-focused adaptation. While he states he is interested in the prospect, his interest isn’t the only factor in making it happen, which he adds is rather unfortunate.

Tears of the Kingdomdirector, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, chimes in with that the voice of fans can help in the prospect, where if they voice their desire for one, it might happen. However, as it currently stands, a film adaptation of theZeldaseries isn’t currently in the works.

This interview also revealed a number of other details about the development of the game. This includes things such asthe origins of Link’s new Ascend ability, which came about as a debug feature to escape caves, to revisiting the Zonai tribe afterBreath of the Wildhad left them as an enigma. Aonuma even stated that the new Ascend ability was his favorite among the abilities introduced inTears of the Kingdom.
