Nintendo has officially announced a remake of the beloved Super Nintendo gameSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. While it decided to opt out of the Summer Game Fest events, Nintendo still hosted aspecial summer Nintendo Direct eventto showcase some of the new games in development for the Nintendo Switch.
Prior to the Nintendo Direct, leakers suggested that a classic Super Nintendo game would be getting a remake for the Nintendo Switch. Some rumors pointed to the game being aChrono Triggerremake, but it’s now clear that the game in question was theSuper Mario RPGremake.

Nintendo announced theSuper Mario RPGremake with a jaw-dropping trailer that showed off the vastly improved graphics. Based on the trailer, theSuper Mario RPGremake will be very faithful to the original gameplay-wise, but with a modern look and some improvements. Anyone excited to reliveSuper Mario RPGshould note that the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch on November 17, so it’s just five months away from the time of this writing. Pre-orders for the game are available starting now.
For those unfamiliar withSuper Mario RPG, the game is basically a precursor to thePaper MarioandMario & Luigigames. It employs similar turn-based gameplay, but mixed with features pulled straight from the coreSuper Marioseries.Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Starsearned a great deal of critical acclaim at the time of its release in 1996, and it seems like a safe bet that the remake will enjoy a similar reception when it launches later this year.
Super Mario RPGfeatures plenty of characters pulled straight from theMariogames, but it also some original characters as well. One of the most notable is Geno, the living puppet character with blue clothing. Fans have long wanted tosee Geno added to theSuper Smash Bros.roster, but that has yet to happen. Now thatSuper Mario RPGis getting a remake on the Nintendo Switch, fans will no doubt have their fingers crossed that this will open the door for Geno to finally make his debut on theSmashroster.
Time will tell if that will ever happen, but for now, Nintendo fans can look forward to relivingSuper Mario RPGwith improved graphics and gameplay when itlaunches exclusively for the Switchlater this year.
