Summary
AStarfieldplayer has discovered that the game’s sanitation bots will clean up after players who drop items on the ground. Bethesda’s massive space RPGStarfieldwas released two weeks ago, and it has already celebrated garnering 10 million players as the biggest game launch in Bethesda’s history.
Starfield’snumerous interior environments are packed to the brim with small details that go a long way in making the universe feel real and believable. Whether it’s memo slates, computers, books on a desk, or an unopened Chunks cheesesteak in an NPC’s fridge, these smaller elements of set dressing inStarfield’s environments make the world pop. One such detail is small sanitation robots that roam around cleaning up interior spaces. They can usually be found in some ofStarfield’s plentiful buildings and lobbies across its many cities, likeNew Atlantis' apartment buildings or MAST tower. Players can even add these bots to their own settlements. However, trying to talk to them merely results in a short and simple line of beeps and boops.

One player discovered a slightly deeper wrinkle of interaction one can have with these sanitation bots. Reddit user cloverpopper posted a short clip to theStarfieldsubreddit of a sanitation bot picking up a small item the player had dropped from their inventory. It’s difficult to tell exactly what the item on the ground was, but cloverpopper added underneath the post that the robot lets out another noise after cleaning up items dropped by the player.
It would be interesting to know if these bots only pick up a specific type of item or if they can also pick up weapons, helmets, and spacesuits. It would also be intriguing to see if they’d call security if they pick up a piece of contraband or if it depends on whether contraband is legal in a specific city or town. WhileStarfieldfeatures a number of other larger robots that can do a great deal more, like Constellation’s Vasco, this is still a nice interactive detail that enhancesStarfield’s world.
It’s possible there are players out there who’ll work on fun mods that can let these sanitation robots do even more, perhaps serving as companions to the player, carrying items, or even aiding in combat. SinceStarfieldhas only been out for two weeksup to this point, and considering the sheer size of the galaxy-spanning RPG, there are sure to be many more discoveries such as this one made by players in the months and years to come.
Starfieldis available now for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
