How to Fast-Travel in Starfield

Players will be introduced to the fast-travel system very early inStarfield’s main story. With so many different points of interest, the game features multiple methods to accomplish this task. There are essentially two distinct tools that players can use to quickly reach several of the game’s destinations.

The first method is found within the game’s scan and survey systems. This method works best for close-range fast travel, such as returning to the player’s ship while on the same planet. This method will only work when not indoors.

The second method of fast-travel is found in the various maps available to the player. There are several ways to use this method, as there are several different maps. While on a planet, players will have access to the ‘Surface Map,’ which allows players to fast-travel to any discovered location on that planet. The Starmap, found in the top left corner of the main menu, will allow players to fast-travel much greater distances.

Fast-Travel Using the Scanner

To fast-travel using the scanner, players cannot be inside a building or any other interior. To open the scanner, press the LB button (or equivalent). This will bring up the full scanner HUD, with several options appearing along the bottom of the screen.

In scanning mode, several icons will appear, usually representing nearby points of interest and the player’s ship. Using the ship as an example, the player will want to hover over the icon and press A. This will bring up a prompt that confirms the player wishes to fast-travel to the ship. Press A once again to confirm, and the game will do the rest. This will work will any nearby destination that the player has visited.

This system is best used for long-distance fast-traveling.

When outside the ship, the player can access a planet-wide surface map through the scanner. When opened, the player should select “Surface Map' by pressing RB. This will show an aerial view of the planet surface, with both topographical and destination information. From this map, players can press Y to instantly return to their ship, or hover over the desired destination and press A. If the player has already visited that location, a prompt will pop up to confirm fast-travel.

Rules for Fast-Traveling in Starfield

There are several instances when players will not be allowed to fast-travel. The first, is during certain story-related moments, but this is not common. The most common example will be when players are carrying too much weight. As previously mentioned, players cannot use the scanner fast-travel system while indoors. However, this rule only applies to buildings and other locations tjhat require a brief loading screen to enter. If the player can enter a building without a loading screen, they will usually be able to fast-travel with the scanner.

This is not to say that players cannot fast-travel at all from indoors. Some destinations will be available from the Starmap, even when deep into caves or similar locations. The best way to know for sure is to simply open the map and check.
