Sonic Frontiersis finally here. To go alongside the game being available to play, a launch trailer forSonic Frontiershas been released for fans.

The latest Sonic game has changed the formula for the franchise, with developer Sonic Team deciding to drop the Sega mascot into an open world for the first time. This change appears to have suited the hedgehog, shown by theSonic Frontiersreviewswhich have been fairly positive about the latest Sonic installment.

The launch trailer is action packed, mixing together CGI cutscenes with snippets of gameplay, all while “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen plays in the background, matching the rhythm of the trailer. The trailer packs a punch, and by the looks of it, Sonic does, too. Combat against foes big and small is on show, with new enemies and an iconic nemesis of Sonic present throughout. Traversal, a key component for anopen world Sonic game, is also on view as Sonic speeds through numerous environments. Sonic’s long time pals also make an appearance, alongside some classic coin collecting, something that has been synonymous with the blue Hedgehog since his introduction in 1991.

While plenty of traversal is on show during the trailer, combat doesn’t get shown off in any great detail. From this trailer alone, it is difficult for potential players to gauge howSonic Frontierscombatworks before getting their hands on the game. This may be due to the simplistic combat system present in the game, which has led to the trailer pulling focus towards the characters and traversal.

Prospective players who were concerned whether Sonic could make the cut in an open world environment may rest a little easier after the release of the game. This trailer sets the tone for the game, showing that despite taking the blue hedgehog out of his comfort zone,Sonic Team has stayed true to the character’s roots, with core mechanics like coin collecting and closed off levels more akin to the class Sonic experience present throughout.

Although the launch trailer does show off some gameplay, it is not representative of how the game looks on every platform. On PlayStation and Xbox consoles the game looks good, however,Sonic Frontierson Nintendo Switch is an entirely different experience. This game has once again shown the limitations of the Nintendo console, with the graphics on Switch being a huge downgrade from the same title on the other consoles.

Sonic Frontiersis available now on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
