Summary

SomeApex Legendsplayers are unable to play the game. Developer Respawn Entertainment has yet to resolve the problem, which appears to have been caused by PlayStation 5s prematurely downloadingApex Legends’ Season 20 update. Fortunately, there is a workaround that should get players back into the game.

The free-to-play battle royale hero shooter launched in 2019, withApex Legends’ Season 20: Breakoutbeginning February 13. The new season’s main attraction is the introduction of Legend Upgrades. This new in-match progression system allows players to upgrade their Legends by collecting a resource called EVO from various actions and by finding EVO Harvesters scattered around the maps and EVO Cashes as a rare loot item. It also introduces the new Thunderdome Map, which sees Legends battling in the arena of a packed stadium.

Unfortunately, something went wrong with the PS5 version of the Season 20 update. Several players have reported a problem where they cannot access the game due to a lack of available servers. According to a tweet from Respawn Entertainment, the new version ofApex Legendswasn’t supposed to launch until around 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern on Tuesday, February 13. However, some PS5s downloaded the update early, preventing players from logging into the game. According to Respawn, the problem should resolve itself once the update goes live for everyone.

Apex Legends Update Glitch Workaround

While that’s definitely an inconvenience,PS5 players can accessApex Legendsby downloading the game’s PS4 version. Players who previously played the game on PS4 can change versions by opening the PlayStation Store on PS5 and searching forApex Legends. After selecting the game, players should click on the “…” icon and choose the “Selection Version” option. Then, players should select and install the version labeled “PS4.”

PlayStation 5 users who do not own the game on PS4 will first need to log into the PlayStation Store from their PC using the same account they use on the PS5. They should then search for the PS4 version ofApex Legendsand add it to their library. Once they own the PS4 version, they will need to go through the same steps as players who already own the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Both groups can switch back to the PlayStation 5 version after the Season 20 update officially goes live.

It’s unclear why some PS5 users got the update early, though it’s definitely an inauspicious launch forthe newest season ofApex Legends. Hopefully, the rest of the season goes off without additional hitches.
