ASkyrimmodder has decided to improve the immersion factor of the game by making it so enemies won’t conveniently forget they’ve been shot in the face with an arrow. Despite being one of themost immersive open-world games around,The Elder Scrolls 5certainly has moments in which this illusion can be shattered. Gamers don’t expect everything to be 100% realistic, but getting lost in a world and its lore is what makes Bethesda’s 2011 epic still so popular after all these years.
The other thing that keeps the game in high regard is the number of inside jokes. There are a bunch ofSkyrimmemes that players can easily relate to. By far the most notorious example of this is the “arrow to the knee” line uttered by one of the guards. It’s been a mainstay meme since the beginning, showing that the title is more than just a vast RPG with dragons and quests. It’s almost transcended the gaming sphere to become a major part of popular culture.

That aside,Skyrimcan irritate when it breaks immersion, and a modder going by the name “whatever” wanted to address one aspect of this with their “Must Be My Imagination” mod. A video shows it in action, in which the player fires off a couple of arrows into a wall and alerts a nearby enemy. Nothing out of the usual so far, but then the player shoots said enemy while remaining stealthed. In the vanilla experience, the offended party will patrol, looking for the perpetrator before going back to an idle pose, not even acknowledging that there’s an arrow in their face. This mod changes that by making shot NPCs say new lines, such as “Damn it! I’m bleeding!” or “I was attacked!” This adds an element of realism, as the enemy now won’t forget that they’ve just been shot.
There are a number of mods that go to certain lengths to up the immersion for a better experience, such as the one in whichSkyrimNPCs use beds more realisticallyby actually getting under the covers. As mentioned above, no one really expects games to be completely true to life, but there are certainly ways to keep players absorbed in the world.
WithSkyrim Anniversary Editionnow out on Switch, Bethesda is continuing in its endeavor to re-release the title as often as it can. After 11 years, it’s fair to say that fans are more than ready for the next installment, but at least for now there are dedicated modders out there working to improve the formula.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Editionis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
