How to Become Thane Of Markarth in Skyrim
If you choose to side with the Empire, the path to becoming a Thane will be long. If you elect to fight the war on the side of the Stormcloaks, the requirements are different. Win the war on the side of the rebels, and you will be granted Thane status immediately. There are no quests or requirements to complete, the title is yours. If you choose to side with the Empire, you will have to do certain jobs for the benefit of the citizens of Markarth. These include the following missions.
Kill the Forsworn Group
When you talk to Jarl Igmund,he will ask you to destroy the Forsworn, a group of skilled and well-equipped warriors. Prepare carefully for battles with camps of former Reach rulers. It is not known for sure how many camps you will have to destroy to get one step closer to being awarded Thane status. In some cases, depending on your level, you can destroy one camp, and that will be enough. In other scenarios, the player will have to go on a real hunt for the Forsworn.
Return the Shield of Father of Jarl Igmund
Your next task will be to find a symbolic item for the family of Markarth’s leaders, Hrolfdir’s Shield. Jarl Igmund will ask you to retrieve his father’s shield. You can find Hrolfdir’s Shield next to the Word Wall south of Bard’s Leap Summit. Be careful, as several Hagravens will be waiting there.
Buy a House to Become a Landowner
Buying a house is a common step on the way to Thane status. In the stone city of Markarth,you can buy a beautiful housecalled Vlindrel Hall. You can do this foras little as 8,000 gold. If you want to upgrade the house, you will have to pay 12,000 gold in total, but at this stage, you don’t need it. Buy Vlindrel Hall and talk to Jarl Igmund to get a new task.
Become a Local Hero
The next common objective on the way to the Thane title is to help the citizens. Go around the town and accept requests from people who need help. Most of these quests are quite trivial and easy. Help 5 citizens and return to Jarl Igmund. After you have helped 5 citizens, Jarl Igmund will grant you the status of Thane of Markarth.
