If there’s one resounding success from theBorderlandsfranchise to call attention to, it’s the art style of the series. Even above theBorderlandsgames' looter-shooter gameplay, it’s well-known for its cell-shaded cartoonish art and animation. TheBorderlandsexperience builds itself out around that style. This begs the question of what other games would feel like withBorderlands' art style, and with the power of mods, that question can be answered; The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimproves it.

A trailer for a recently releasedBorderlandsfilter mod forThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimshows just what Bethesda’s open-world RPG might look like with the looter-shooter’s stylized visuals. There are two parts to the mod. The first is a set of new textures forSkyrimthat captures theBorderlandsart style. The second is an ENB, graphics settings that help createBorderlands' cartoon-like defining black outline around pretty much everything. Installing either just the textures or the textures and ENB should giveSkyrimthat uniqueBorderlandsaesthetic.

To say that the mod is thorough would be quite an understatement. Mod developer Kanjs has altered the textures ofSkyrim’s armor, architecture, clothing, creatures, dungeons, plans, weapons, and more. That includes the vanilla content ofSkyrim, as well as the expansion content fromDawnguard,Dragonborn, andHearthfire. In fact, there are individual mods for each one of these specific areas ifSkyrimplayers would rather just give one location of the game aBorderlandsvisual style.

Kanjs also has plans to support the content included in theAnniversary EditionofSkyrimin time, noting that an Anniversary Mod component of theBorderlandsmod is coming soon. They’re also working to add support so that theBorderlandsvisual mod will work with the impressiveStatic Mesh Improvement Mod, which greatly improves the quality of a significant number of static 3D models inSkyrim. No tentative dates are available for when these two additional features will be added.

The question deserving to be asked is whetherSkyrimis better, or even more interesting, with theBorderlandsmodenabled. The answer is probably going to be dependent on how much someone likesBorderlands. The mod absolutely does what it claims, particularly from close-up, but it’s also quite a bit weird seeing that look in anything that isn’tBorderlands.

Regardless, it’s an impressive achievement on Kanjs' part to have put such a robust and good-looking mod together forSkyrim.PCSkyrimplayersare able to download theBorderlandsStyle mod from Nexusmods now.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
