Despite garnering interest, the show still mainly garnered mixed reviews, with many pointing out thatMarvel’s bad pacing had failedSecret Invasion. Despite the issues, the miniseries still managed to make a big splash, with multiple surprises and twists with massive ramifications not just for the future of the MCU but also for beloved events and characters in the franchise’s past. This amount of boat shaking seems to have gotten one of the big players involved with the project nervous. Speaking toThe Hollywood Reporter, Selim joked, “I’m worried that I will get death threats because of that, and also because I’m the guy who took out Maria Hill. So I’m actually going into hiding now.”
The statement was in response to a question about the reveal that the character Rhodey, best known for being a close associate with Tony Stark and piloting the War Machine suit, had secretly been a Skrull in disguise, with the real Rhodey held captive somewhere. Salim had previously weighed in onwhen exactly War Machine was replaced. The most educated guesses place the real Rhodey in the unfortunate position of missing the death and burial of his best friend, Tony Stark.
This inadvertent retcon upset fans, many of whom consider Tony Stark and his death of the highest importance in the canon. After revealing that Don Cheadle, whoseArmor Warsseries is now being developed as an MCU movie, had never asked him which point in the timeline he’d been replaced, Selim admitted it’s still open to interpretation.
Secret Invasionis now available for streaming on Disney Plus.
