The Batmanis almost here, and other than the hype surrounding Robert Pattinson donning the cape and cowl as the iconic caped crusader and the visionary Matt Reeves in the directors chair, the film’s distinct yet gorgeous cinematography seems to separate itself from previous adaptations. Now, Pattinson and co-star Zoë Kravitz have shown high praise for Greig Fraser’s work, calling the Director of Photography a “genius.”

Fraser is no stranger to shooting some of the most beautiful looking films in the past decade. From his work on acclaimed projects likeKilling Them Softly,Zero Dark Thirty,Foxcatcher,Lion,Rogue One,Vice,The Mandalorian, andmost recentlyDune, Fraser has slowly become one of the best DP’s in the industry, so it is no surprise that his visuals onThe Batmanwould be met with overwhelming praise, especially from the stars of the film.

Sitting down with Collider’s Steve Weintraub in a new interview, Pattinson and Kravitz were asked about what it was like collaborating with Fraser, to which the two responded with nothing but positive comments. “He’s an absolute genius. It’s so crazy, like, you go into it and even in the costume test and everything, you do not realize how difficult it is to light the cowl," Pattinson shared. “I mean, Greig said to me a lot, he’d say, two most difficult things when he was in film school, they said that by far the hardest thing to light are the Darth Vader helmet and the Batman cowl."

“Like, I mean, you’re just in shadow no matter what you do. And somehow he managed to figure out a way through it where it just looks cool, it looks like Batman, but also you may see expression and stuff,” Pattinson added. The actor would go on to include that Fraser’s work on the film and in general is “masterful.” Kravitz, who plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman, contributed her thoughts, adding, “Yeah, that’s the thing. He really makes it look easy. So, it would be hard for us to know what was the most difficult because he really looks like he’s cruising.”

The Batmanwill focus heavily on the noir-driven, detective version of the character, as the film will take place in Bruce Wayne’s second year of fighting crime when he is forced to deal with corruption and tracking down aserial killer known as the Riddler. Judging from Fraser’s use of film and shooting in low lighting, Reeves' film appears to be more faithful to the original comics, presenting an even grungier, more gothic Gotham City. In a time when movie theaters are gradually bringing in more audiences after suffering a hiatus due to the pandemic, Fraser’s work onThe Batmanappears to be a must-see on the big screen.

Other than the bat and the cat,The Batmanstars Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson. Two sequels are in the works whiletwoThe Batmanspin-off seriesare in early development for HBO Max.

The Batmanarrives in theaters on March 4 and on HBO Max on June 09, 2025.
