Rick and Mortyare coming back a full year after the show went on an intergalactic vacation that unravelled the series’ universe, as Adult Swim announced the family duo will be coming back this September 4 in its accustomed time slot.
Season five proved to be a defining chapter forRick and Morty,as the finale suggested the show’s future could feature some linear story elements that were previously all but absent from it. That theory could find some backing in the words of Adult Swim and Cartoon Network president Michael Ouweleen who referred to this new chapter as a “soon-to-be iconic season” that “will be giving fans a unique way to be part of the fun,” perhaps suggestingRick and Mortyis about to changein more ways than one.

The highly anticipated announcement came accompanied by a corresponding tweet on Adult Swim and the series’ official Twitter account. The post showed Rick and Morty sporting enviable 6-pack abs, likely the fabrication of one of Rick’s experiments instead of gym time or a diet from the two. Although no direct confirmation was given regarding the number of episodes, all odds point to season six following the long-established tradition of ten episodes per season, with the sole exception being the first one due to the pilot’s inclusion.
Rick and Mortyreturn to the 11 p.m. ET late-night slot they’ve made their own on Adult Swim for a while now. However, the words of Ouweleen could hint at a further evolution for an animated series that’s always been known for its advertising and crossover potential. The latest of these promotional efforts features aRick and MortyAdidas collection, however, the pair have also pushed products of all kinds such as Sony’s PS5, Old Spice, and fast food.
Season five’s revelation finally showed the kind of sorrow that governs Rick’s actions, as the loss of his wife and daughter was the defining element that caused him to spiral into the multiverse of lives that fans have grown to love, so expect writers to tackle that subject withRick and Morty’s signature humor. Keep in mind that many of the episodes from last season saw unusually mixed reviews from critics and fans, so in a way,Rick and Mortyis coming off a relatively low point, at least compared to its very high standards.
