Summary

Even about a year and a half after the initial release ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, many players frequently find themselves coming back to the game thanks to its high-level Tera Raid events which are available to challenge for a limited time every now and then. The often exceptional loot and unique Pokemon which can be earned by successfully beating these raids really make the events stand out as one ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s only real endgame activities, and though special Tera Raid events have featured quite a few starter Pokemon from throughout the series so far, a new mystery gift available to players might provide some insight into what future Tera Raid events could offer.

Most recently,Pokemon Scarlet and Violetfans faced off against a unique Mighty Primarinain a rerun of the 47th special Tera Raid event, which featured the Water-type Alolan starter taking on the Fairy Tera Type. While this raid event has been wrapped up now, another limited-time opportunity has already appeared in the form of a mystery gift. The gift in question is actually a Quaxly, or more specifically, Dot’s Quaxly from thePokemon Horizonsanime.Scarlet and Violetfans can redeem this gift by using the code D0T1STPARTNER from the mystery gift menu, though players do have until November to claim the gift, so there’s no rush.

Easily Accessible Starters For Pokemon Could Be a Big Deal

This isn’t the first time players have been able to redeem a Paldean starter Pokemon as a mystery gift either, with Liko’s Sprigatito also being distributed as a free gift to players back in March. Mystery gifts themselves are nothing new, but starter Pokemon as mystery gifts are rather uncommon, and for good reason. Every core-seriesPokemon game forces players to choose one starteramong three options, and beyond this initial choice, most Pokemon games don’t actually offer many opportunities to acquire other starter Pokemon. The exclusivity of starter Pokemon is likely why no Paldean starters have ever shown up as Tera Raid bosses for players to catch, but this could change in the future if Game Freak is deciding to make starters more easily accessible.

Introducing Paldean starter Pokemon as raid bosses wouldn’t just make for some awesome Tera Raid events, though. Were these starters to be added to the pool ofPokemon that can be battled as bossesat Tera Raid dens throughout the Paldea region, players would have a viable method of obtaining the three Paldean starter Pokemon all by themselves. This would allow for some added flexibility to building up a team, though it would cut out the need for trading in many players' cases, for better or worse.

Why Aren’t Starter Pokemon Commonly Found in The Wild?

Save for a select few instances throughout the series, starters generally cannot be encountered in the wild, and are scarcely offered for trade by NPCs. This has been the casesince the earliestPokemontitles, and is done partly to encourage trading between players that have chosen different starters. Even if players were able to obtain the full range of starters in the wild,Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare each full of version exclusives, so trading would still be necessary for players looking to fill their Pokedexes. Quite a few starter Pokemon from previous generations have appeared as raid bosses so far though, such as:

That said, more recent releases in the series seem to have taken a step forward in making starter Pokemon more accessible, withPokemon Legends: Arceusallowing players to encounter and catch starter Pokemonin the wild, andPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Indigo Disk DLC introducing an environment where players can catch any and all starters introduced prior to Gen 9 in the wild. Though it’s hard to tell at this point, it does seem likely that future raid events - either in Gen 9 or beyond - could accommodate the starters from their respective gens.
