The latest Easter egg a player was able to uncover insidePokemon Scarlet and Violetbrought with it a mix of emotions due to it being a tribute to a character from one of the franchise’s more recent video games.Pokemon’s history is full of characters thatPokemonplayers keep near and dear to their hearts, whether it be older players' fandom forProfessor Oakto the near-universal love for Eevee. This particular player, though, has a soft spot for a character they got to meet inPokemon Legends: Arceus.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare chock-full of Easter eggs players have been discovering in the time since the games were released in November 2022. Developer Game Freak wasn’t shy about reaching into the franchise’s past, either, with some Easter eggs looking like they were pulled directly out ofPokemon Red and Bluein the form of pixel art displayed in Alfadora Town. Additional Easter eggs are ones players have come to expect fromPokemongames, whether it be nods to the nurses and police officers somehow all being related or the protagonist’s family coming from a region featured in previous games.

As mentioned above, though, it was an Easter egg dedicated to a particular character fromPokemon Legends: Arceuswhich tugged on one player’s heartstrings. Reddit user Green_Tea_Totaler shared in a post they noticed a drawing of Professor Laventon on the chalkboard duringRaifort’s history classplayers can attend in bothPokemon Scarlet and Violet. Green_Tea_Totaler said noticing Laventon’s image first brought a sense of joy, though this quickly turned sad after realizing the amount of time that has passed sincePokemon Legends: Arceus.
Laventon is a traveling professor and member of the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corps venturing across the region of Hisui, later known as Shinnoh, to study the region and the Pokemon inhabiting it. Players encounter the professor after being flung back in time by the game’stitular god Pokemon, helping players become familiar with the region and providing the three starter Pokemon to choose from. He can typically be found at all the base camps and Galaxy Hall for the remainder of the game, providing players tasks and rewards for the research they do across the region.
While players having attachment to characters such asProfessor Laventonis fairly common in gaming, Green_Tea_Totaler’s reaction highlights a stream of thought not as commonly seen among players. It can be argued that while players may have a love for certain characters, most players may not think of these characters' futures beyond the end of the game, given the separation between the game and the player. That said, it can also be argued Green_Tea_Totaler’s reaction is starting to become a more common one as game narratives offer deeper themes and characters for players to attach to.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetare currently available on Nintendo Switch.
