The Pokemon Company dropped a new trailer forPokemon Scarlet and Violetrecently, giving fans a fresh look at the games and revealing some of the new Pokemon that they will be able to catch come launch in November. Coming out of the latestPokemon Scarlet and Violettrailer, one new Pokemon in particular has been embraced by the community, with praise for its cute design and funny name: the Normal-type pig Pokemon Lechonk.
Lechonk is seen briefly in the latestPokemon Scarlet and Violettrailer, with one of the Pokemon trainers encountering a level 2 Lechonk in the early game.Pokemonfans don’t get to see the whole battle play out, but they do get to see Lechonk attackQuaxlybefore the footage moves on to somewhere else. Despite Lechonk only getting a few seconds of screen time, it has already had countless memes made in its honor, and it will be interesting to see how fast The Pokemon Company capitalizes on its popularity with plushies and other merchandise.

Not only is Lechonk one of the more popularnew Pokemon inPokemon Scarlet and Violet, but its name also lends further credence to a theory about where exactly the new games will be set. The Pokemon Company still has yet to revealPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s region, but the consensus is that it’s based on Spain, and more specifically, the Iberian Peninsula, and Lechonk is actually more proof in support of that theory.
As it turns out, “lechon” is Spanish for “suckling pig” or “piggy.” Needless to say, it would be an odd choice to give Lechonk a Spanish name ifPokemon Scarlet and Violetaren’t set in aregion based on Spain. Besides borrowing “lechon” for Lechonk’s name, the “chonk” is obviously a pun pointing out that the new Pokemon is chubby, though its Pokedex entry reveals that it’s not actually fat.
According to Lechonk’sPokedexentry, it is actually made mostly of muscle, not fat, as it is “constantly walking around in search of food.” It will be interesting to see if Lechonk’s muscle mass comes into play in its evolution line, assuming that it can indeed evolve. It’s possible that another trailer forPokemon Scarlet and Violetwill drop that reveals what Lechonk can evolve into, but it’s also possible thatPokemonfans will have to wait to play the games for themselves to learn more about Lechonk and the other new Pokemon making their franchise debut.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violetlaunch November 18, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
