Pokemon GOFest 2020 has finally arrived and players worldwide are being treated to bonuses from the comfort of their own homes. Those fortunate enough to be ticket-holders of the bigPokemon GOevent have enjoyed access to an additional slew of event perks, including the opportunity to encounter a long-awaited Gen IV favorite, the shape-shifting Rotom.
Rotom is an example of one of several forgotten Pokemon, like Kecleon, that remain un-introduced toPokemon GOdespite the game moving past its respective Generation. Up until now, Pokemon trainers had no way to encounter Rotom, but the appliance-haunting ghost has finally made its appearance.

Trainers looking to meet and catch Rotom will have to put down the Poke Balls and get ready to play photographer - the Electric-type ghost will be available throughout the entirety of GO Fest as a photobomb encounter. Much like Smeargle, ormany of the hat-wearing Pikachu, Rotom will simply intrude on players trying to capture a picture of their Pokemon. This will happen up to five times per day, giving players a good handful of chances to capture the spooky critter.
If a player decides totake a snapshot of their Pokemon, there’s a chance of Rotom (otherwise, Smeargle) photobombing the moment - if this happens, Rotom will be visible in front of the player’s Pokemon in the final image. If a photobomb has occurred, a player should simply finish up their photos and exit to thePokemon GOoverworld (whether or not the photo is saved is irrelevant). Rotom should appear on the map as if it were a wild spawn, where players will be able to encounter it like any other Pokemon.
Please note that despite the above description,Rotom will only photobomb players with a paid GO Fest 2020 ticket.That said, aside frompurchasing a GO Fest 2020 ticket, players need only take snapshots of their partner Pokemon during the event to trigger an encounter with Rotom. So specifically, players should aim to trigger photobombs between 10 AM and 8 PM local time, on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26.
Although Rotom can be encountered throughout the entirety ofthe GO Fest 2020 timeframes, many veteran players are suggesting Trainers hold onto their photobomb encounters until the expected 2x candy bonus following the Friendship habitat hour/during the Fire habitat hour. With only 10 total encounters, players would be looking at 60 candies instead of 30, simply for catching Rotom at the right time. With Pinaps, a smart Pokemon Trainer could easily turn that into 120 candies.
Rotom is known, not only for being a unique Ghost/Electric-type, but also for having the odd habit of occupying household appliances. AlthoughPokemon GOFest 2020 only introduces the Pokemon’s Electric/Water-type form, Wash Rotom,Rotom can be found in 6 different forms. Aside from its standard Ghost/Electric form, Rotom appears as: Frost Rotom (Ice), Heat Rotom (Fire), Fan Rotom (Flying), Wash Rotom (Water), and Mow Rotom (Grass). Each version pairs its unique typing with an Electric typing, instead of Rotom’s standard Ghost typing. Perhaps players can look out for these alternate Rotoms in the near future?
