Pokemon GO’s Mega Evolution update added a new Special Research story to the game. That Special Research is dubbed “A Mega Moment,” and its branching tasks make it slightly more complex than a standard story. After completing Step 1, players must choose between Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, and this decision will affect some of the tasks and rewards that are featured in the remaining steps of the A Mega Moment Special Research. Namely, there is a task in the story that will specifically instructPoGOplayersto Mega Evolve the Pokemon that they have selected, and the Mega Energy that is awarded throughout will also match that choice.

For those players that are curious about the update that coincided with the release of the A Mega Moment Special Research story, its intent was to makePokemon GO’s Mega Evolution mechanic"easier and more rewarding." The primary manifestation of the ease component of the update is that Mega Energy is no longer required to Mega Evolve a Pokemon that has undergone the transformation before. While Pokemon do need a rest period between Mega Evolutions, which can be decreased with Mega Energy, this change should make the mechanic more accessible.
With respect to the increased rewards,PoGO’s Mega Evolution updateintroduced Mega Levels, a brand new way to improve Pokemon. More specifically, players can increase the Mega Level of a Pokemon by Mega Evolving it repeatedly, and there are bonuses associated with doing so. Among those bonuses are increased catch Candy, increased catch XP, and boosted ally attacks, and they are active any time that the Pokemon is Mega Evolved.
