Summary

A creative fan has reimaginedPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Fidough and Dachsbun in the art style of thePaper Mariogames. Last year’sScarlet and Violetintroduced several colorful new species of Pokemon to Nintendo’s beloved monster-collecting franchise, includingthe canine Fairy-type Fidough. As its name implies, Fidough resembles a cross between a puppy and what appears to be a Spanish dessert pastry named Ensaimada - a fitting combination given the European influence ofScarlet and Violent’s Paldea region.

Like most Pokemon, Fidough is just the first step in an evolutionary lineage. When its experience level reaches 26, Fidough becomes Dachsbun - a creature that combines various bread rolls, loaves, and pretzels with the look of a real-life Dachshund. Even beforeScarlet and Violentlaunched on the Nintendo Switch last November, fans have created plenty ofinspired fan art of Fidoughand Dachsbun, envisioning alternate “flavors” and Shiny variants for the pastry-themed pups and imagining them inPaper Mario’s art style.

Reddit user and fan artist TimDrawsStuff did exactly this, posting a charming pair of Fidough and Dachsbun animations on r/pokemon late last week. As part of a larger art project TimDrawsStuff is working on, these animations depict what Dachsbun andFidough would look like asPaper Mariocharacters- complete with simplified designs and thick black line art. In the comment section of their post, TimDrawsStuff explained how they used Abode Animate to rig the sprites by linking multiple image files together. Meanwhile, other users are impressed with the designs – with some even wishing that the earlier, 2DPokemonentries had used this kind of animation.

PokemonandPaper Mariomay seem vastly different at first, but the two Nintendo franchises share plenty of similarities, namely that they depict turn-based battles in the style of classic RPGs. One of the areas that helps thePaper Marioseriesstand out from the rest of theMariogames is its unique art style, which depicts classic characters like Mario, Princess Peach, and Bowser as flat, paper-like cutouts that could battle enemies using simple, quick-time button and joystick prompts. Some of thePaper Mariogames are available to play on the Nintendo Switch, with the fan-favoritePaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Doorreceiving an HD-enhanced port next year.

TimDrawsStuff has already imagined several ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Pokemon in the visual style of thePaper Mariogames as part of their ongoing Paper Paldea Project, including Gholdengo and Gimmighoul and several Paradox Pokemon. While their take on Fidoguh was already shown off back in August, their newly-revealedversion of Dachsbun skillfully mixes the cute, Dachshund-like design of the original and the charm of thePaper Marioseries. Fans of TimDrawsStuff’s work can likely expect even more of these impressivePokemon Scarlet and Violetdesigns in the future.
