During this June’s Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, many of the platform’s biggest upcoming exclusives were absent, andFablewas one of those games. Announced ahead of the launch of the Xbox Series X/S consoles,Fablewas used to help build up hype for the platform. It’s always been a project with years left in development, though, and remains so. ForFablefans worried about the status of the game can rest easy, as a job listing shared by Playground Games makes it clearFabledevelopment is continuing to move forward. The latest job listing from Playground Games, which opened a second studio to focus on open-world RPG gamesalongsideForza Horizon, is for a Quest Scripter. Like all of PlayGround Games' job listings, it explains which team the job is for straight away. The Quest Scripter is for theFableteam and, as its name implies, is tasked with implementing quests in the open-world RPG. That clearly implies there’s a lot of work left to do, but also that content is actively being implemented inFableright now.RELATED:Big Xbox Games Are Apparently Skipping Sunday’s ShowcaseThe Quest Scripter is just one of a significant number ofFablejobs currently listed on Playground Games' website. In the art team alone, Playground is hiring gameplay animators, character artists, environmental artists, UI artists, technical animators, art managers, art directors, and more. While the status ofFable’s developmentisn’t clear, it certainly appears that Playground is aggressively expanding its team forFable’s development.
The closest thingFablefans have to a release window for the new game is the now legendaryNvidia GeForce Now leak, which listedFabledown as an August 02, 2025 release. However, it also hadRedfall,Forza Motorsport, andPerfect Darkall listed as 2022 releases, so it’s safe to say it’s unreliable. A 2024 launch, if not a 2025 or beyond release, seems in line with what’s currently known about the project.
Making predictions based on job listings like they’re tea leaves is obviously not very productive, but the important message is thatPlayground Gamescontinues to move forward onFable’s development. It’s rapidly growing its development team to work on key aspects of the game and not just pre-production, and there’s no indicationFablehas changed or been rebooted.
As for whenFablefans can expect an official update on the game’s development, it may be some time. If June’s presentation focused on games coming out in the next year, it may be June 2023 or even 2024 beforeFablegets its next official development update.Fablefanswill just have to be patient, like they’ve been for the past decade.
