PlatinumGames, the development studio behind some incredibly popular titles such as theBayonettaseries,Nier: Automata, andMetal Gear Rising: Revengeance, is known for releasing fast-paced action games that don’t follow conventional game design concepts. Recently, the game studio gained a new vice president and CBO, previous Nintendo Licensing General Manager Takao Yamane. Following that appointment, Famitsu sat down withPlatinumGamesto talk about the studio’s future, and the upcoming titleProject GGwas also discussed.
First unveiled with a teaser trailer back in 2020,Project GGis the next title in Hideki Kamiya’s superhero trilogy.Viewtiful JoeandThe Wonderful 101are the other games in that trilogy, and while it isn’t known how closely the two will be connected withProject GG, it seems the new game will at least build on the precedent set by its predecessors. Since an initial reveal, news onProject GGhas been rather lacking. Platinum can’t exactly be blamed for that, as it has likely had its hands full developingBayonetta 3for release later this year.

However, it does seem thatProject GGhasn’t just been forgotten about. If anything, it seems Platinum may be gearing up for more information to be dropped on the game soon. When asked if it would be possible to get additional information onProject GG, Takao Yamane stated that fans could see more of the game “next June.” While he didn’t clarify whether this meantProject GGwould be at E3, the timing would line up. As well, it could be a big announcement for the convention’s highly anticipated return following a few years ofE3 being canceledor existing as a digital-only event.
Hideki Kamiya, Platinum’s vice president, went on to give some more information about the upcoming title. He stated that he cannot give any specifics on the game, but has claimed thatProject GGis a much bigger titlethan had first been anticipated. “I don’t think thatProject GGwould have become a project of the scale it is today if it was just my idea alone,” Kamiya says. It seems thatProject GGhas had a large influence on the developer as well, as Kamiya spoke of how the game expanded with President and CEO Atsushi Inaba’s “big ambitions.” Apparently, Inaba’s proposal was to say “this is the kind of game PlatinumGames is going to make from now on.”
Responding to this, Kamiya decided to “flesh out” the core element ofProjectGG, expanding it into a project of a much larger scale. As well,Project GGwill differ from other Platinum games in the fact that it won’t be a pure action title, though it will have a “core game” component similar toThe Wonderful 101’sUnite Morph andBayonetta’sWitch Time. It was also added that the plans forProject GGwere able to expand thanks to an investment fromChinese tech giant Tencentin 2020.
