At the time of its release in September 2020, developer Kinetic Games probably didn’t anticipate just how popular its co-operative ghost hunting titlePhasmophobiawould become, especially among the streaming community. With therecent “Cursed Possessions” having just been releasedin time for the holidays, the game now has a lot more content and, in keeping with the spirit of Christmas, players are noticing that there’s one particular jolly character that has not only been put in, but has been aggressively hunting down and attacking players.

A number of people on Twitter have been posting clips of themselves playing the newPhasmophobiapatch, specifically, the moment in which they realize that Santa Claus has been inserted into the game as one of the ghosts. User Otter Lady can be seen in her Twitch clip during the exact moment they realize which entity is on the prowl. The first clue occurs when they notice the otherwise jolly sound of bells ringing before they spot a spectral being dressed up in Santa’s traditional red garbs manifesting in the room.

Another user who goes by Sarena uploaded a similar clip, in which they too are alerted to the presence of the holiday-themed ghost when they hear the bells jingling, proclaiming “Santa!” when they see the apparition appear before them. It seems as thoughthePhasmophobiaChristmas updateis bringing joy to many people who are seeing the new, and presumably temporary, ghost for the first time. This is something of an amusing departure from a game that many consider to be quite intense and terrifying.

In general, it’s a neat little touch that the developer has put in, which is befitting of this time of year for many. It’s also in stark contrast to the Halloween update that rolled out not long ago. In that patch,Phasmophobiawas given a new nightmare difficulty, as well as a new map, Maple Lodge Campsite, which featured an appearance from Slender Man, so making the game that extra bit spooky.

Given the huge popularity of Kinetic’s IP, it’s perhaps not surprising thatPhasmophobiais one of the highest rated games on Steam, and is seemingly going from strength to strength. With the new update bringing with it an additional ghost that is thwarting a lot of investigations, as well as the aforementioned “cursed possessions,“Phasmophobiais hopefully going to enjoy a lot more time as one of the most interesting indie horror games of the last year or so.

Phasmophobiais currently available on Steam. The game is available in VR and non-VR.
