Pacific Rim: The Blackdebuted in 2021, with fans of the franchise embracing its darker tone, especially after the vapid nonsense that wasPacific Rim: Uprising. It was likely that film would’ve killed the series, but thankfully Netflix gavePacific Rimanother chance. However, this will be the final season ofThe Black, due to Netflix’s habit of keeping most shows on very brief runs. But anime fans are used to quality over quantity, and if this season sticks the landing, it’ll keepthePacific Rimfranchiseon a strong note.
ThePacific Rimfranchise started with Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 film. It instantly became a cult favorite, with many people considering it the finest mecha and kaiju film Hollywood’s ever produced. With its colorful characters, epic fights, and dense mythos, it was a summer blockbuster for the ages. Del Toro has a real Midas touch about him, as he can deliverpopcorn action likeHellboyand Pacific Rim,as well as awards-friendly dramas likePan’s LabyrinthandThe Shape of Water, all with a consistency rarely seen since the golden age of Steven Spielberg.
And even better, Guillermo del Toro has maintained a strong relationship with Netflix, as they first produced his acclaimed animated franchiseTrollhunters. And in the coming year, they’re also releasing hisstop-motion adaptation ofPinocchioand his anthology seriesCabinet of Curiosities. So Netflix is quickly is becoming the definitive service for del Toro fans, and the fact that they continuedPacific Rimis just the beginning.
How willPacific Rim: The Blackcontinue this epic franchise? And what’s all to come from this Netflix/del Toro partnership? With all of this and more coming up, 2022 will surely be one of Netflix’s most exciting years.
