Before the time skip of One Piece, Luzany served as Admiral Aokiji of the Navy and shortly after the events of the Paramount War, he clashed with none other than his friend, Sakazuki, for the position of Fleet Admiral.

This fight went down on Punk Hazard for 10 days and ended with the victory of Sakazuki. Consequently, Aokiji ended up leaving the Marines and the story led fans to believe that he was now a pirate.One Piece1081 finally cleared that up and confirmed to the fans that he is, in fact, the 10thTitanic Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates.
How Kuzan Joined The Blackbeard Pirates
InOne Piece1081, fans finally got to see how Kuzan ended upjoining the Blackbeard Pirates. Around a year after the conclusion of the Paramount War, Kuzan was on an island in the New World, where he was attacked by the members of the Blackbeard Pirates. This was likely done because he possesses a Devil Fruit power they would like to get their hands on andthat is the Hie Hie no Mi. Expectedly, the Blackbeard Pirates were no match for the former Admiral and he ended up freezing them within a matter of seconds. When Blackbeard heard of it, he immediately tried to rush to their rescue and ordered Kuzan to undo the freezing.
Surprisingly, the two ended up hitting it off and started drinking together. At this point, Kuzan had also unfrozen all the members of the Blackbeard Pirates. Kuzan ended up taking the offer and, since then, he serves as the 10th Titanic Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates.
How Strong Is The 10th Titanic Captain, Kuzan
Being a former Admiral of the Navy, it goes without saying thatKuzan is extremely powerful. He was once among the strongest military weapons that the World Government had at their disposal. Now, he is a member of the Blackbeard crew. For an Admiral, who can contend against the Yonko, to be a member of a Yonko crew would make the Blackbeard Pirates extremely overpowered. When it comes to Kuzan himself, he possesses the powers of a Logia-type fruit called the Hie Hie no Mi, which allows him to become ice, as well as produce and manipulated according to will. Furthermore, he also has excellent control over Haki, and that is to be expected of a student of Monkey D Garp.

While he can freely pursue his sense of justice as a member of the Blackbeard crew, at the end of the day, he is written to be a likable character. Kuzan, as things stand, is actually dead set on protecting Blackbeard. By the looks of it, he believes that he can pursue his own sense of justice as a part of this crew and get the answers to the questions that he has always been searching for.
However, that certainly doesn’t mean that his loyalty can’t be swayed. For now, however, he is a member of the black beard crew through and through. He is willing to risk his life in an attempt to stop Kobe from escaping the island and he is dead set on fighting his mentor for the sake of his position. Of course, in the future, he can be swayed and perhaps he will choose a different path for himself, which cannot be disregarded, however, at this point in time, he looks like he is going to stay as the 10th Titanic captain of the Blackbeard Pirates.
