Kraven’s datapad revealed a lot of characters that fans can expect to encounter inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2whether they are a friend or a foe. It is telling that Kraven seemingly considers Dr. Curtis Connors’ Lizard to be the character that could be his equal in battle, but based on the enormous mutation form Connors takes that might actually be true. In this way,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2confirmed a bunch of characters for the sequel, and it will be interesting to see how the franchise decides to pick up where it left off with a lot of them, especiallyYuri Watanabe’s Wraith.

But perhaps even more intriguing than the characters shown on the datapad are the characters who weren’t. Kraven obviously wouldn’t be interested in hunting anyone who did not possess abilities, technology, or some sort of augmentation that made them a threat, but there are many crucial characters inInsomniac’s Spider-Man universethat are still withheld from the sequel’s marketing thus far, and the fact that Mary Jane Watson was not present in any capacity during the gameplay sequence shown is highly concerning.

Mary Jane is Notably Missing from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Mary Janeis paramount to the narrative and her rekindled relationship with Peter Parker obviously needs to be a thread that Insomniac follows up on in the sequel. Therefore, it is easy enough to assume that Mary Jane is around someplace during the events that take place in the PlayStation Showcase’s gameplay reveal forMarvel’s Spider-Man 2.

She is not heard from or talked about, though. This wouldn’t otherwise be alarming, but Mary Jane was fairly prominent on Peter’s comms after they had partnered up together inMarvel’s Spider-Man, and she has become an even more significant part of his life since the events of the original game.

IfMary Jane is still working as an investigative reporter for The Daily Bugleand shares leads with Peter, it would seem odd that she is not looped in on Peter and Miles’ comms. Furthermore, Ganke is present and even remotely keeping up with Miles through a hacked hunter drone inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, making Mary Jane’s absence felt that much more.

Peter will inevitably need to talk to Mary Jane about the situation that unfolds and his symbiote-induced rage will likely affect their relationship, but maybe it already has at this point in the narrative and that is why she is not available on comms. If they have already experienced conflict and Peter’s pushed her away, that would be the perfect fuel for him to be even angrier and more hellbent on pursuing Kraven and the Lizard inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2.

It might be Miles’ onus to reach out to Mary Jane and attempt to understand why Peter’s behavior has changed so drastically, and together they could find a way to snap him separate from the symbiote. Because she hasn’t been shown or acknowledged, there is no telling what that situation looks like or if she is even conscious of his behavioral changes yet.

The details fans do know at this point are that Peter and Mary Jane have a healthy, transparent relationship and have recently enjoyed a trip to Symkaria together for her work. Peter recently also moved into hislate Aunt May’s home in Queens, which interestingly might’ve landed him squarely in the neighborhood of Connors. But as for what Mary Jane’s life looks like, it is anyone’s estimate.

Of course, it is possible that the gameplay and Kraven reveals were simply meant to establish the tone of the game as well as its two main antagonists. There hasn’t even been an official look at Peter or Miles outside their costumes revealed yet, so not seeing Mary Jane yet might mean nothing at all.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2launches on October 20, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
