Nintendo began its E3 2021 presentation with the reveal thatKazuya Mishima fromTekkenis being added toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, but that’s not the only announcement it had prepared. A new 2D Metroid game calledMetroid Dreadwas also revealed for release this October, and it will be coming alongside two amiibo.
The title carries on the 2D style ofMetroid: Samus Returnsfrom 2017and is billed as “Metroid 5,” the sequel toMetroid Fusion. Its trailer opens up with Samus exploring planet ZDR where she encounters a robotic being called E.M.M.I., which once served as a DNA-extracting research machine according to Nintendo’s official listing. Various E.M.M.I pursue her throughout the adventure, and the Treehouse gameplay presentation to follow reveals it takes exceptionally powerful attacks to destroy the rogue robots.

Both Samus in her brand-new suit, which sees her in a red, white, and blue color scheme, as well as E.M.M.I. will be released as amiibo figures on October 8. The newMetroidgame, which costs $59.99, is available to pre-order now.
Amid the E3 conference, Nintendo’s official Twitter account also revealed a Special Edition collection forMetroid Dreadwill be available alongside the new 2D title. This Special Edition includes the game with a unique cover art, a steel game case, an artbook, and five art cards depicting all of the mainlineMetroidtitles up toDread.
This popular Nintendo franchise was not the only one to make a surprise appearance at today’s E3 conference.WarioWare: Get it Togetherwas announced for Switchand is set to release on September 10. Other new games revealed include remakes ofAdvance Wars 1and2, as well asMario Party Superstars.
Meanwhile,Breath of the Wild 2got a gameplay showcaseto cap off the event. The game does not have an official title, but Nintendo confirmed it will aim to release the title in 2022, and unique mechanics such as Link phasing through solid matter were on full display as he aims to save Hyrule again.
WhileMetroidfans should be pleased about this new 2D game announcement, thehighly anticipatedMetroid Prime 4was only confirmed to still be in development - no new information was provided. Time will tell when that game releases, butMetroid Dreadshould be good to hold people over in the meantime. Anyone interested in getting their hands on the new amiibo will likely have to hurry after they become available.
