Bayonetta 3is one of the most highly anticipated games coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2022. Announced five years ago at The Game Awards 2017,Bayonetta 3then mostly disappeared for a while, until in 2021 fans got their first look at gameplay. Then, the third game in theBayonettaseries went quiet again, leading some fans to fear a release date delay. However, recently Nintendo has confirmed thatBayonetta 3will be launching in October 2022with a new gameplay trailer.
Apart from the release date, plenty of other things were shown off in the new gameplay trailer. Returning characters like Rodan, Jeanne, and Luca were confirmed. Anew addition toBayonetta 3was also introduced in Viola, who is a witch training under Bayonetta. As well as side characters appearing in the trailer, it seems that another version of the titular protagonist may show up inBayonetta 3, as displayed in a screenshot Nintendo has since put up on its Twitter.

The image was posted alongside the caption, “Wait, is that…two Bayonettas?” With that simple tweet, Nintendo seemed to confirm for fans that another version of the famed witch could be appearing inBayonetta 3. Fans may not have noticed that this other character is indeed another version of Bayonetta when watching the trailer, as the alternate witch is wearing an outfit vastly different from what players of the first twoBayonettagames would expect. The clothing for the second Bayonetta is red and gold, with a flamboyant design and even some armor on the shoulders.
Given the recent success of films likeEverything Everywhere All at OnceandDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, some fans are already creating multiverse theories around the story ofBayonetta 3. Another version of Bayonetta has already appeared in the series, as in the first game the witch ended up finding a younger version of herself in Cereza. Fans believe thatCereza is set for a return inBayonetta 3, which seems all the more likely with another version of the witch apparently confirmed for the game.
Bayonettafans will often pick at the slightest details to try and unravel the story of a game through its trailers. Already, some believe that players may not be taking on the role of the original Bayonetta at all, and due to the location changes anddifferent hair seen inBayonetta 3, Cereza could even be the protagonist of the latest game. Theories like this would be interesting if true, but fans will have to wait until October to see if they’re right or not.
