The lastNational Treasurefilm came out in 2007, and ever since then rumors of a third film in the adventure saga continue to fly around, but no announcement has been made official. Fans of the Nicolas Cage starring, Declaration of Independence stealing franchise have been left without much hope for the future of the series, given how almost nothing has been heard about the fabled third installment. In a surprise twist of fate, however, there has been some interesting news about the franchise.

In accordance with the Disney Plus strategy of spinning up as many different original series as possible, a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that aNational Treasureseries has been greenlit with the original writers and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on board. The project has apparently been in progress for nearly a year, which seems to line up with Bruckheimer’s recent comments hoping to produceaNational Treasureseriesand get to work on a third film.

That said, this new series doesn’t seem to be picking up whereNational Treasure: Book of Secretsleft off, with the news indicating that this 10-episode show will be a reimagining of sorts with a new main character. The series will follow Jess Morales, a DREAMer attempting to recover the lost treasure and uncover secrets about her family’s history. It has been reported that the show will explore themes of identity, community, patriotism, and more when it makes its way to the streaming platform.

StrictNational Treasureoriginalists don’t need to fret too much, however, as Bruckheimer has previously mentioned that he wantsthe potentialNational Treasure 3to star the original cast: “The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.” Of course, there doesn’t seem to be an official production ongoing for that hypothetical film, but no doubt Disney will be keeping a close eye on the reception for the series.

Perhaps if the show does well, that may put long-term fans one step closer to their dream of a thirdNational Treasurewith Cage reprising the starring role. Still, in the meantime, a spiritual reboot isn’t a bad idea at all and could be just the thing to revive the franchise. While there still isn’t much news or information about the upcoming show, hopefully, teases, previews and hints will start coming out soon.

Cage, on the other hand, hasn’t been left out of the streaming game. The often eccentric actor recently served as the host of aNetflix series exploring the history of swear words.
