For a long time now, fighting game fans have talked about the idea of a “free-to-play” fighting game and how it would do incredibly well if a big one was ever made. Well,MultiVersusis that game, and it’s doing incredibly well. But, not every aspect ofMultiVersusis free; they’ve got to make their money back somehow.

And, while the monetization of this game is something that’s currently being argued about in the community, people are absolutely buying into it. So, let’s go over some of the most absurdly expensive cosmetics inMultiversusand why.
Disclaimer: Prices will be broken down into the in-game currency, Gleamium, which is only sold in packs of 450 ($5 USD), 1,000 ($10 USD), 2,200 ($20 USD), and 6,000 ($50 USD).

Ringout VFX: 1200 Gleamium
First up are theRingout VFXplayers can buy. These are the effects that pop up on screen when a character is knocked into the “Blast Zone” on any of the stage’s four edges and is then KO’d. Making cosmetics for getting KO’s is a pretty interesting idea, andMultiVersusalready has a lot of amazing VFX players can buy, with a lot more assuredly coming in the near future.
Out of all the VFX players can buy, however, the most expensive ones are theEpic Rarity VFXwhich have a purple border. These are1200 Gleamium each(AKA a 450 pack and a 1,000 pack) and include:

1200 Gleamium
Character Variants: 1500-2000 Gleamium
Next up are likely the cosmetic players will care about the most,Character Skins. Each character in the Roster already has one skin at launch, and there have already been a lot more seen in official trailers, datamines, and leaks that have yet to drop in-game.Now, the most bombastic skins or “variants” are also the most expensive, and the game already technically has two Legendary skins available, the Cake Variant for Jake the Dogandthe Animated Series Variant for Batman.
While the Cake Variant isn’t purchasable and is instead part of the Premium Battle Pass (for now), the Batman Variant alone costs2000 Gleamium(AKA one 2,200 pack). Luckily, all the other Variants are ofEpic Rarityand cost a bit less at1500 Gleamium. But, because there aren’t any 500 Gleamium Packs for purchase, only 450, this is still heavily incentivizing players to buy a 2,200 pack anyway. As far as Epic Skins go, there’s

Mad Love
Emotes (AKA Taunts): 500 Gleamium
Moving on to the Taunts,MultiVersusis thankfully a fighting game that allows players toTaunt(they call it Emoting) each other after pulling off a great Ringout or combo. And, most if not all of the Taunts in the game are pretty great.

From Shaggy literally ripping his shirt off to Lebron James doing a Salsa dance, there’s a lot to love. That is, of course, unless it’s a Finn Backpack Attack spammer using their Taunt, of course. That said, all of them are500 Gleamium, again, just enough to be too expensive for the lowest Gleamium pack. Still, they are high quality, and for anyone that wants them, all theEpic Rarity Tauntsinclude:
Salsa Dance
Non-Gold Character Unlocks: 700 Gleamium
This next one is likely the least egregious, as these can be unlocked naturally without spending a dime, but are quicker to use money to unlock, and that’s the characters themselves. The intended way for players to unlock characters inMultiVersusis to grind out the Gold Currency given to them through level ups, matches, and so on and then spend that Goldon characters that aren’t part of the free rotation.
But, players can also just spend Gleamium to save time. The weird part, however, is that every charactercosts 700 Gleamiumexactly (again, an “in-between” amount) but their Gold costs differ based on their technical difficulty. Recommended Characters (the best ones for beginners) cost 1500 Gold, Expert Characters cost 3000, and all other characters cost 2000.

The “Maxed Characters” Badge: 20,000 Gold
And finally, the last Cosmetic item unrelated to theFounder’s Packsor theBattle Passis theMaxed Characters Badge. For those who don’t know,Badgesare these little infographic items players can equip to their profile that keep track of things like total Ringouts, Attacks Dodged, and games won with certain characters. When loading into a match against another player, their equipped badge shows up on the top-right of their character box, and players can check their stats.

Now, the Maxed Character’s Badge keeps track of exactly how many characters the player has leveled to the “maximum” for their rewards (that being level 15). Of course, characters can level past that, but this lets the opponent know just how many characters this character plays. That said, this Badge does cost 20,000 Gold to purchase. That’s right, it costs Gold, not Gleamium, and almost enough Gold to unlock just about every character on the Roster instead of purchasing it, so it’s a big commitment.
The Founder’s Packs: $40, $60, Or $100
And of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning theFounder’s PacksforMultiVersus, the optional purchases that may or may not haveleaked how many characters are coming in the near future. There are three different Packs that players can buy, aStandard($40 USD), aDeluxe($60 USD), and aPremium Pack($100 USD). These are by far the biggest lump sum that players can drop onMultiVersusright now and include a wide range of cosmetics in them, such as:
N/A
Founder’s Name Style
And, considering the 30 Character Tickets as part of the Premium Founder’s Pack are almost double what the current roster of characters even is, it’s safe to say that this is both the most expensive item but also the one that gives the most for the money spent.
The Premium Battle Pass: 300 Gleamium
And last but not least, the Battle Pass items.MultiVersuscurrently has its pre-seasonBattle Passgoing on until August 8th, and there are a ton of Cosmetics that are unlocked within it (and it takes a while to complete), both through thePremium Pass(whichcosts 300 Gleamium) or theFree Pass, such as:
Legendary Jake Variant
Level 15 (Premium)
And, it’s been confirmedin the Open Beta FAQforMultiVersuson their websitethat the items in the Battle Pass aren’t exclusive and may come back for purchase at a later date. Whether they’ll come back as items obtainable in-game, through Gleamium, or some other means, that much still isn’t clear. Either way, for a measly 300 Gleamium, getting 12 different Cosmetics is a steal, so theBattle Passis by far the best money investment inMultiVersusat the moment.
