Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ characters are all written predictably, meaning that if a character is iconic enough from Marvel lore, fans should be able to instantly identify them by their lines of dialogue. Characters rarely ever say or do anything that will be unpredictable and refreshing, so besides thespontaneous romance budding between Blade and Captain Marvel, fans can already predict what one character might think based on the context in any sequence.

Iron Man and Captain America follow their iconic decade of live-action portrayals, but it is nice to finally hear dialogue between lesser-known Marvel characters.Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Deadpool DLCdid its best to dance around its rating guidelines, so instead of letting Deadpool be as wildly racy as possible, there are subtle jabs and mild remarks made instead. This is disappointing yet understandable under the circumstances, but that same condolence cannot be extended to Venom’s alter ego.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Eddie Brock is Uninteresting on His Own

Eddie Brock Jr. was always going to be at a disadvantage coming intoMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ Abbey, which is full of engaging and dynamic characters. Eddie is arguably not interesting on his own, at least not until his Lethal Protector persona becomes Agent Venom. Without that, he is a simple man with no remarkable qualities.

Marvel’s Midnight Sunshad the opportunity to make Eddie more unique, but this interpretation falls flat by relying too heavily on trying to make him funny. Eddie has the comedic charm of someone’s parent making too many puns. This could be intentionally awkward, but it seems like Firaxis was unsure of what to do with Eddie’s personality aside from an investigative journalism angle, and his dialogue seems to suffer from Marvel’s need to make characters have a comedic element.

Eddie is only briefly traumatized by the idea that he was manipulated and tormented by Lilith and Mephisto consecutively, but this would have been a more interesting development to pursue. Eddie takes to investigatingMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ vampyre threaton his own, though nothing about his character is more interesting than when he is talking about his shared history with Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Eddie Brock is Only Interesting in Relation to Spider-Man

Fortunately, what Eddie’s relationship with Peter Parker was originally likeand how they both obtained the symbiote are fun mysteries to uncover through Eddie’s friendship levels and hangouts. Many comic fans may already know this story, but the gradual pace at which Eddie is willing to relinquish this information makes his friendship levels fun to progress through. Once his friendship level is maxed out, and he no longer has anything about Spider-Man to share, he returns to being a cringeworthy character with little substance on his own.

This makes Eddie’s association to Spider-Man inMarvel’s Midnight Sunsthe only intriguing part of his character, while a character as simple as Michael Morbius has a more natural transition. Venom is still worth taking out on missions for the incredible damage output he is able to achieve through a full Ravenous meter, but Eddie is far less favorable to interact with.

Marvel’s Midnight Sunsis available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
