Summary
The Disaster Curses inJujutsu Kaisenare some of the most powerful and important villains in the entire story. This is because they stand not only as obstacles for the heroes to overcome, but they are also central to the overall character development of other characters, such as Mahito’s relevance to Yuji’s arc. This, mixed with their incredible Cursed Energy and Techniques, makes them some of the strongest characters in the franchise.
This point is further exacerbated by how all four of the Disaster Curses can use the ultimate technique ofJujutsu Kaisen; The Domain Expansion. This technique is incredibly difficult to master and to use properly, as only the strongest andmost adept sorcerers can do so, which goes on to show how formidable these curses are, since all of them can open their Domains. So, let’s take a look at each of these Domains and what they do!
What Is A Domain Expansion?
Domain Expansions are considered to be the pinnacle of Jujutsu sorcery and are so rare in the world that even most Grade-1 level sorcerers cannot perform them. Since every sorcerer has either an innate or inherited technique, they all hold the potential to have a Domain Expansion, though this is something that is still incredibly difficult to pull off due to the immense amounts of Cursed Energy needed to do so. Even among those with the ability, they can only perform about one per day due to the incredible stress it places on their brains.
Domain Expansions are the strongest possible usage of one’s technique. This is because when cast, the user’s innate domain inside their brains is manifested externally in a barrier, whose walls are made of the technique itself. When inside this barrier,their Cursed Technique is made strongerand gets a sure-hit effect which will always connect, whether the effects are lethal or non-lethal.
The Domains are activated by hand seals that are unique to each person and the utterance of ‘Domain Expansion’. In most cases, these Domains make barriers of varying sizes, though Sukuna and Kenjaku are the only ones with Domain Expansions so refined and powerful that they manifest in the real world instead of within a barrier and the sure-hit effect of their technique remains.
Hanami’s Domain: Ceremonial Sea of Light
Hanami is the only one of the Disaster Curses whose Domain Expansion hasn’t been seen in the anime or the manga. The only time it is about to use the attack isagainst Yuji and Todotowards the end of the Goodwill Event, where Hanami reveals its black arm with a massive flower on the shoulder.
Just as it utters the words to activate its Domain, the Ceremonial Sea of Light, the curtain keeping Gojo out of the school premises is destroyed, interrupting an attack that may have taken Yuji and Todo’s life. While the exact properties of this Domain are unknown, Hanami’s Cursed Technique, Disaster Plants, would play the main role in it by making the barrier take the form of a garden or forest, filled with Cursed Energy-infused plant-life.
Dagon’s Domain: Horizon of the Captivating Skandha
Dagon is the Disaster Curse spawned from humanity’s collective fear of the ocean, something which him and his Cursed Technique fully encapsulate.His innate technique, Disaster Tides, allows him to summon immense and seemingly endless waves of water formed from his Cursed Energy, capable of drowning and overwhelming his opponents. Other than that, Dagon can also summon many fish-like Shikigami.
His Domain initially seems quite beautiful and serene, taking the shape of a tropical beach in sunny weather. However, once in it, Dagon can summon endless waves of Shikigami that latch onto his enemies and essentially eat them alive, as was seen in his battle against Nanami, Maki, and Naobito. This is an incredibly powerful Domain as the Shikigami are endless and will always hit. The only reason the sorcerers survived is becauseToji’s lack of Cursed Energymeant that the Shikigami couldn’t target him and his physical prowess was just too great for them or Dagon to handle.
Jogo’s Domain: Coffin of the Iron Mountain
Jogo’s Domain Expansion is one of the strongest in the entire series. Since Jogo is born from humanity’s fear of fire and volcanoes, his innate technique is the total manipulation and utilization of fire, which is also seen in his powerful Domain. The Coffin of the Iron Mountain takes the appearance of the inside of an active volcano, whose properties can be completely controlled by Jogo.
The ground of this Domain starts to spew out molten magma, making it so that only the most skilled of sorcerers can survive the ordeal. On top of the blazing temperature increase, Jogo can also manipulate the various structures within the domain as he can take gigantic rocks and boulders to crush his enemies or burn them alive with lava. However, the only time he used it was against Gojo, whooverpowered this Domain with his Unlimited Void.
Mahito’s Domain: Self-Embodiment of Perfection
Mahito is one of the strongest curses in all ofJujutsu Kaisen, and his Cursed Technique, Idle Transfiguration, is proof of the power that he holds. This technique allows him to ‘change the shape of one’s soul’, which essentially means he can change the very nature of a person by transforming an average human into a transfigured creature that destroys and kills for him because it knows nothing else. Along with this, he can also alter his own shape into whatever he desires.
The Self-Embodiment of Perfection is easily one of thestrongest and most dangerousDomain Expansions in the entire series. Due to the sure-hit effect of all Domains, Mahito instantly connects to the soul of anyone trapped inside his barrier, meaning that he doesn’t need to physically touch them himself. The barrier of the Domain itself is formed from many of Mahito’s hands, which signifies that Idle Transfiguration will affect a person wherever they may be in the Domain.
Mahito’s mastery over his technique and Domain is so great that he can tweak the range and activation time of the Domain just like Gojo can.As seen in the Shibuya incident, Mahito activated his Domain Expansion for just 0.2 seconds against Yuji and Todo after just seeing it once from Gojo, which saw him become the strongest Disaster Curse of them all!
