Summary
Jujutsu Kaisenis currently in the climaxof the Culling Game arcand fans have already witnessed some incredible clashes taking place in the story over the course of the last few months. Undoubtedly, the Culling Game arc has also seen the biggest clash in the entire story unfold and that is the one that saw Sukuna and Gojo on opposite ends. Gojo versus Sukuna was a fight that fans had been desperately waiting to see over the years and, in the Culling Game arc, they finally got a chance to enjoy this fight to the very best.
Of course, the conclusion of the fight wasn’t something that fans would ideally like, given that it wasn’t written all that well and, at the same time, it was also saddening. Essentially, Gojo ended up losing his fight against Sukuna and lost his life in the process as well. While Sukuna certainly was strong, Gojo could potentially have lost the battle on purpose which, while weird, does make a lot of sense once one looks deeper into things.

Gojo’s Defeat To Sukuna
Gojo and Sukuna fought an incredible battle which was quite even for the most part. Gojo took the upper hand in the battle on many occasions andSukuna had the upper handon some as well. For the vast majority of the fight, Gojo was the one who was dominant, despite him being at a disadvantage in more than one way. Gojo was fighting against his very own student and, at the same time, two cursed techniques at the same time. To make things worse, Gojoa was also up against more numbers. Sukuna making use of Mahoraga and other fused beasts such as Agito in combat gave Gojo quite a difficult time.
Despite everything, Gojo managed to pull through and he decided to unleash every bit of his power, which led to him overpowering Sukuna and making him feel fear for the very first time in a thousand years. Gojo successfully crushed him with his ultimate Hollow Purple and this technique was so strong that Sukuna was left on the verge of defeat. Yet, surprisingly, in the very next chapter, Gojo was on the floor, chopped in half and it was revealed that Sukuna was the one who had won the battle. This came as a shock to many fans and it also did not make much sense, given that Gojo was on the brink of victory and fans did not even get to see what exactly happened and the explanation they got for it was even more questionable.

Why Gojo Losing To Sukuna Doesn’t Make Sense
Gojo’s defeat to Sukuna certainly does not make sense on many levels. And, this could very well play into the whole idea that Gojo ended up losing the battle on purpose as a part of the overall strategy. While one may consider this to be too out there, it is an idea that is actually very sensible. For one, it should be remembered that Gojo lost because he could not perceive the strongest attack that Sukuna launched at him. Sukuna had absolutely no way of winning against Gojo without Mahoraga and when he did use Mahoraga, he used it to get a blueprint to get past the Infinity that surrounded Gojo. When Mahoraga successfully managed to do it and gave him a blueprint, Sukuna decided to use his ultimate power of cleaving and dismantling to launch a slash that could cut the entire world.
Essentially, the target was changed from Gojo to the world and everything that existed in the world became a target for it, including Gojo. This technique was quite powerful, however, it simply shouldn’t have got through Gojo given that infinity is infinite and no matter how much Sukuna tries to cut it, it would still have no end, at the end of the day. The very idea of infinity was destroyed inthe fight between Gojo and Sukuna.

What’s more, fans know Gojo to be a user of Six Eyes. Using these eyes, Gojo can see everything and perceive every single thing that is going around him. He can see things that others can’t and he can perceive things at an entirely different level. Six Eyes are an incredible power, having which made Gojo one of the strongest in the entire series.
Yet, the fact that Gojo’s Six Eyes could not see this technique being launched at him is perplexing. There is absolutely no reason why Gojo should not have been able to perceive this technique being launched at him.

This is especially bizarre because Kashimo was able to see this technique in the very next few chapters and even dodged it. For Kashimo to dodge the world-cutting slash but for Gojo to not be able to perceive it makes absolutely no sense and leads one to believe that Gojo let it hit him on purpose.
Why Gojo Could’ve Lost To Sukuna On Purpose
One would wonder as to why Gojo would let Sukuna’s attack hit him on purpose and while it might not make much sense in the beginning, fans should consider the fact that Gojo and his students have planned extensively as to how to deal with both Sukuna and Kenjaku. Recently, Takaba was revealed to be the bait for Yuta to finish off Kenjaku and the strategy certainly worked. Similarly, Gojo could have been used as the first line of defense against Sukuna and essentially be killed in an attempt to get the fighters to drop their guard and reveal their trump cards. With Gojo’s death,Kenjaku became more relaxed, given that the strongest fighter on the side of the opposing end was now dead and, at the same time, Sukuna also transformed into his reincarnated form.
The biggest reason as to why Gojo would lose on purpose pertains to Megumi. Gojo absolutely couldn’t kill Sukuna and the only reason for that is that if he did so, Megumi would die as well. Gojo was essentially fighting with his hands tied behind his back and even though he could put Megumi in a state close to that, he could not kill him and this has been confirmed in the series before, as it was mentioned that Yuji would die with Sukuna if Sukuna is killed.
Essentially, Gojo’s role hair would have been to destroy Mahoraga so Sukuna cannot adapt to any more powers and, in the end, get everyone to lower their guard by dying. This would give and his friends the opportunity to jump in and save Megumi, especially with the power of the Deadly Sentencing technique. Had Gojo not destroyed Mahoraga, Sukuna could very well have adapted to this technique as well and all plans would have failed. Gojo managed to destroy Mahoraga and weaken Sukuna as much as he possibly could without killing him so Megumi lives.
Then, he could’ve let himself die so everyone around him would drop their guard. Kenjaku proceeded to lower his guard and that led to his eventual death. Furthermore, Sukuna entered his reincarnated state and this gave Yuji and Higuruma a chance to enter the battle and utilize Deadly Sentencing and other techniques without having to worry about adaptation. This also meant that Megumi would be alive, given that Gojo did not kill Sukuna and now, the chance to save him is in front of him.
Regardless of how much one calls Gojo to be selfish, at the end of the day, he would sacrifice his life for his students. This has been mentioned by him inJJK 0and, also in the original story itself. For Gojo, the plan here is to save Megumiand he would gladly sacrifice himself for that. Hopefully, Gojo will be resurrected later on in the arc when all the goals are met and more details will be shared on why he couldn’t finish off Sukuna in the first place.
