HBO Max’sBatgirlis one of the new up and coming projects for the streaming platform that is home to many DC comic book characters.Batgirlwill follow the titular character and showcase the fan favorite crime fighter in her first live-action solo project.
Regarding Batgirl and any other characters, the film will feature Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon. This Gordon will be played by J.K. Simmons, who previously played him inZack Snyder’s Justice League.

During a recent interview with A Frame, Simmons went on to speak about being asked to return. He said, “[It] really came as a complete surprise that they wanted me to be that guy again… [Leslie] brings so much to it. I completely agree about In the Heights. She was really charming and compelling and charismatic in that—and she brings all of that to Batgirl in addition to pretty kickass stunt skills.“Commissioner Gordon will have more of a rolein this project compared to his appearance inJustice League. Simmons went on to explain why there’s a difference, saying, “The tiny role that Commissioner Gordon played in Justice League was very businesslike and very, ‘Let’s see if we can stave off the end of the world!'”
The actor then talked about whyBatgirlmade him want to return to a role like this. “What appealed to me about this movie was from Jim Gordon’s point of voice, it’s really more a story about him as a guy and as a father and not just about the guy who’s turning on the Bat Signal and trying to keep the citizens of Gotham safe,” He said. “Although that’s obviously also a part of the story… it was a chance to delve into a different aspect of the character.”
Gordon is often underdeveloped and usually serves as a very basic supporting character. The Batmanstar Jeffrey Wrightdid an amazing job at making Gordon much more interesting. The character held his own in regard to dealing with the crime in Gotham City, and he also had more personality than what many are used to seeing.Gothamalso did a good job at giving the character layers, as the show followed the commissioner during his early days as an officer. Hopefully Simmons’ Gordon makes a compelling case for why this character is more than just somebody who calls Batman to do all the work.
With every Commissioner Gordon there needs to be a Dark Knight, but in this case it appears thatMichael Keaton will be playing Batman. No confirmation as to what happens to Ben Affleck’s Batman, so hopefully fans get answers whenBatgirlreleases.
Batgirlis expected to be released on HBO Max in late 2022.
