On the surface, it seems as thoughStrayis just a neat little indie game about playing as a cat. However, it’s become immensely successful in a short span of time, even getting ahigher user rating on Metacritic thanElden Ring, as well as being at the number 42 spot on Steam’s top 250 games of all time. Evidently, jumping into the paws of a feline is something that has struck a chord with the community. On top of that, there are tons of mods that up the immersion.

A modder called Jessica Natalia has recently unveiled an add-on forStraythat actually lets people experience what life is like as a cat from a first-person perspective. While the official game is in third-person, no doubt some out there will have been wondering what it would be like to see the world from a feline’s point of view. A video on Nexus Mods gives a brief overview of what the mod looks like during play. The camera controls seem a little bit janky, but it’s still the same experience, except now players can see things from the animal’s position.

Given how popular the game is, it’s perhaps not too surprising that so many mods are making themselves known. From turning the cat into Garfield, to people actually inserting their real pets into the game, to someone making aDoommod that lets theStraycat run around and shoot demons, it seems the community at large has plenty of ideas for BlueTwelve Studio’s new release. It begs the question of what other ways people can tweak the adventures of a singular feline.

Despite being quite short, it looks as though the game is pretty full of hidden secrets. One person has managed to decipher all the in-game text and work out what’s being said, while some other players have discovered thatStrayfeatures a couple ofSkyrimEaster eggs. All the mods and secrets could be what’s contributing to this sudden popularity, but most likely it’s down to the fact that gamers get to play a real-life version of the “can you pet it” meme.

For that reason, it’s almost certainly theideal video game for animal lovers. While there are other titles out there and more coming out that pertain to those who adore pets and other furry creatures, it’s not really something that’s explored a lot in gaming, so BlueTwelve was obviously onto something when developingStray.

Strayis available now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
