Hollow Knight’s Fungal Wastes Hide A Very Strange Character

Plenty of NPCs, alive or dead, dotHollow Knight’s ruined kingdom of Hallownest. Some, like Quirrel and Cloth, can be found throughout the game, while others like Leg Eater are stationary. One thing these three share is their appearances within the Fungal Wastes area, a fairly large regionnear the center ofHollow Knight’s map. Linking the Fungal Wastes' upper-left corner to the Fog Canyon is the Queen’s Station, a run-down Stag Station devoid of enemies. The player can encounter Quirrel there at a certain point, but of greater interest is the NPC named Willoh.

As a giraffe weevil, Willoh is able to stretch her neck through her room’s ceiling to snack on some rare fungus she found. She seems pleasant enough, and Cloth mentions that a bug fitting Willoh’s description warned her to avoid the Mantis Village. Willoh urges the Knight to return later to give her some company, but this request may hide darker intentions. Asa detail fans may only notice upon replayingHollow Knight, using the Dream Nail on Willoh reveals she’s thinking of eating the Knight, and has already tasted other bugs in the area.

Hollow Knight Willoh

Willoh Should Receive Some Explanation In Hollow Knight: Silksong

With the Monarch Wings, the player is able to access the tiny alcove Willoh is eating fungus from, discovering a Hallownest Seal and the corpse of a bug. Striking the corpse with the Dream Nail repeats its desperate last plea that it isn’t food, suggesting Willoh is willing to break Hallownest’s laws and eat other sapient bugs. If there’s any consolation for this, based on her Dream Nail comment of nearby bugs being bland, she may be why the Station is free of Husks. The only other thing inHollow Knighttangentially related to Willoh is the two Grimmsteeds thatpulledHollow Knight’s Grimm Troupe to Dirtmouth, and who also appear to be giraffe weevils.

That’s all players have on the omnivorous weevil, an NPC who seems to exist only to point to a collectible and add a dash of uncertainty to an otherwise safe space. Her species and dialogue imply that she is well-traveled, possibly hailing from outside Hallownest. This makes herperfect for a return as connective tissue inHollow Knight: Silksong, with a bit more to say about herself in tow. Fighting her would ruin her creepy charm, but Hornet should at least get the chance to question Willoh where the Knight could not. Hopefully that can finally contextualize this strange, murderous bug who seems at odds with the intricately constructed world ofHollow Knight.
