Head ofXboxPhil Spencer has once again offered his opinion on the subject of the console wars in an interview with Edge Magazine. Last year Spencer was particularly vocal on the matter and stated thatXboxdoes not view PlayStation to be the enemy.

Spencer’s comment did not come out of the blue as not too long agoXbox praisedThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a Nintendo exclusive, on Twitter. The company responded to a reply on its original Tweet that asked users “What’s a game that makes you feel right at home?” with one user statingBreath of the Wild. Xbox responded in turn by praising the game itself with the comment “BotWoffers such a relaxing sandbox experience (punctuated with the occasional death laser).” which earned it major brownie points in the eyes of many gamers.

Spencer’s comments this time around regarded the toxicity related to the console wars and how gamers and companies should instead focus on growing the industry at large as opposed to trying to segment it. Spencer stated that Xbox does not focus on how to make other platforms smaller but instead wants the gaming industry as a whole to grow along with Xbox. The company seems to agree wholeheartedly with this statement as evenHalo Infinitebecame available on Steam at releasewhen the series was formerly exclusive to the green team.

Xbox is not the only company encouraging industry positivity as last monthPlayStation congratulated Xbox on its 20th anniversary. This trend of positivity is also good for gamers as it may, hopefully, lead to more dialogue regarding cross-play which is another point that Spencer made. He stated that Xbox likes to focus on cross-play and cross-saving so that gamers are able to play with one another regardless of the console that they decided to buy.

Although it is nice to see industry rivals engaging in some healthy back-slapping, ultimately, both PlayStation and Xbox are companies and their goal is to make a profit. This is why PlayStation is attempting to take a slice out of Xbox’s pieby planning its own rival to compete with Xbox Game Pass. This move can also be particularly good for consumers as competition may end up driving the price of both services down. It is also difficult to blame PlayStation for wanting to capitalize on the massive amount of success that Xbox Game Pass has enjoyed thus far.
