While the Chinese development studio was first founded in 2011, the company has only truly seen its worldwide breakout over recent years with the monumental success of its newest games. The developer took the world by storm in 2020 with the release of its flagship RPG and followed it up with thehighly-anticipated launch ofHonkai: Star Railearlier this year. Now, HoYoverse has solidified its position as a major player in the gaming industry.

Genshin Impact’s overwhelming popularity has been apparent since the RPG first debuted in September 2020 with the gacha game racking up significant sums of money. The game’s newest gacha banners regularly boast over $10 million USD in sales in China alone, with its most successful banner earning nearly $50 million. The recent release ofHonkai: Star Railhas performed equally well to its predecessor with the game’s early banners boasting similarly high totals. Now, HoYoverse’s earnings over the past year have even seen the studio topping a gaming icon in Sony.

Recent financial reports from HoYoverse have revealed the staggering profits the developer made throughout the 2022 fiscal year. The Chinese studio reported a profit of more than $2 billion USD throughout the last year, placing the exact total at $2.26 billion. The number significantly tops that of Sony’s PlayStation throughout the same year, who reported a still massive profit of $1.84 billion. The profit also comes as part of a year when HoYoverse put up $3.83 billion in total revenue with its games’gacha systems proving to be lucrativefor the studio.

HoYoverse’s banner earnings come from a year that saw several significant changes for the developer throughout the course of 2022. Last year saw the annual release of a new region forGenshin Impactwith the debut of the Sumeru region, as well as the launch of multiplehighly-anticipated characters like Nahidaand Wanderer. The early parts of 2023 have also seen massive success for the developer, both withGenshin Impact’s highest-grossing banner and the previously mentioned debut ofHonkai: Star Rail.

Throughout the rest of 2023, HoYoverse looks poised to follow up the strong year it saw in 2022 with even greater success. The studio’s most recent release inHonkai: Star Railhas already amassed a sizable fanbase, boasting over 20 million downloads within just two days of its launch.Genshin Impactis also gearing up for the debut of its newest region withthe Hydro Archon’s region of Fontaineexpected to be added to the game this summer.
