Summary

Insomniac Gameshas had an incredibly busy last few years, and it seems like things are only going to continue to ramp up for the studio. Though the developer has been releasing games pretty consistently for almost three decades now, Insomniac really turned up the heat in 2018 with the release ofMarvel’s Spider-Man, which was quickly followed byMarvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Moralesin 2020, and thenRatchet and Clank: Rift Apartjust one year later. And now, Insomniac is getting ready to release itsnext major AAA game,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is set to launch in just over two months.

But whileMarvel’s Spider-Man 2is set to be another monumental release for the studio, it’s far from the only thing Insomniac’s got cooking right now. Announced alongsideMarvel’s Spider-Man 2all the way back in 2021,Insomniac is also currently working onMarvel’s Wolverine, and while it doesn’t have a confirmed release window just yet, it probably won’t be too far off. And as if that wasn’t enough, Insomniac has also just announced that it’s got a third video game project currently in the works as well, and though no official details have been given, fans can probably make one big assumption about the game long before it’s even announced.

Insomniac’s Third Game Will Probably Be Multiplayer

PlayStation has always seemingly been a company with a plan, and its current one is going to see the publisher try and put out as manyfirst-party live-service multiplayer gamesas possible. For the last year or so, Sony has made repeated announcements that it’s going to be focusing on online multiplayer games for its next phase of first-party development, apparently planning to put over $1.2 billion into these projects over the next few years. And while many fans are vehemently against this next phase, there’s little they can do about it, with PlayStation having already set things in motion.

Themost recent PlayStation Showcasewas a pretty big disappointment for most fans, withMarvel’s Spider-Man 2being the event’s saving grace. One of the biggest reasons behind this disappointment was the lack of any real gameplay shown during the event, with PlayStation mainly relying on cinematic teasers for most of its first-party projects, and most of these first-party projects are ushering in this next phase of PlayStation, withMarathon,Concord, andFairgamesall being live-service online multiplayer titles.

Right now, PlayStation is seemingly moving forward with its live-service plans at a lightning-quick pace, with multiple online first-party multiplayer games all planned to release in quick succession. But leading the charge are those multiplayer titles that come from already-established popular IPs, such as Naughty Dog’s upcomingLast of Usmultiplayer game, and Guerrilla’sHorizonmultiplayer title. And with all the evidence pointing to the same outcome, it seems likely that Insomniac’s third game will be some kind of live-service multiplayer title.

Back in 2021, a job listing fromInsomniac Gamesteased that the company was working on some kind of multiplayer game. In May 2022, more rumors surrounding some kind of Insomniac multiplayer title started to appear online, with some claiming that the project would be a new IP for the developer, and wouldn’t be using the Marvel license. Since then, a handful of rumors have occasionally cropped up all repeating the same notion that Insomniac is working on a multiplayer game, and with PlayStation’s current huge push into that territory, it only makes sense.

While Insomniac has dabbled with multiplayer in the past with some additional modes inRatchet and ClankandResistance, it’s never put a major focus on online play. Even now, with titles likeMarvel’s Spider-ManandRatchet and Clank: Rift Apart, online multiplayer isn’t anywhere to be found. But that doesn’t mean thatInsomniac Gamescan’t create a compelling online multiplayer experience, and if the last few years have taught fans anything, it’s that Insomniac is more than capable of handling extremely ambitious projects.
