Mass Effect’s emphasis on player choice is celebrated by fans. Whether players decide to interact with other characters through binary Paragon or Renegade options, there is a great depth of unique storytelling inMass Effect’s original trilogy.

Not every gameplay decision is airtight in terms of how it sits in the narrative, however. As is such with science-fiction, fans must suspend their disbelief when it comes to interdimensional travel through Mass Effect relays and fictional alien species. But one strange incident inMass Effect 2is receiving attention for how out of place it seems, and how easily it could be overcome. Lately, a fan has shared that their disbelief cannot be suspended for aparticular circumstance inMass Effect 2.

SlytherinBear95 has questioned the logic behind a sequence during Tali’s Dossier mission inMass Effect 2, where Shepard and his squadmates encounter a collapsed pillar in their path. Ultimately, this thwarts Shepard from being able to access the quarian mines. The pillar’s width while on its side measures it just above Shepard’s head, as seen in the fan’s screenshot. SlytherinBear95’s confusion is justified by how easily it would seem for the characters to simply climb the obstruction and gain instant access to their destination. But instead of scaling it, players are tasked with obtaining two demolition charges in order to blow it up.

Many fans recommend that Jack, a biotic criminal and potentialromantic interest inMass Effect 2, could use her abilities to make quick work of an ordinary structure such as the pillar. This has raised comments in response to SlytherinBear95’s query, with fans comparing how powerful certain characters and squadmates are in gameplay as opposed to when they are in cutscenes. As with player choice, fans wish that the cutscene could have played differently depending on which characters are present in the player’s squad during that mission.

Further, there are other thoughts fans have shared regardingMass Effect’s infamous pillar. For example, gamergeek17 notes that the downed pillar leaves a margin of space between it and the building that Shepard could arguably squeeze through. Beautiful-Duck-9453 jokes that Shepard would not be able to climb or interact with the pillar because it is not a waist-high set piece in the environment.

This obstruction presents a rare occurrence where the characters may not have needed a more difficult solution to surpass it. As a result, fans agree that it is a strange obstacle to put in the way of such esteemed andaccomplishedMass Effectcharacters. Of course, having Shepard blow the pillar up is a much more cinematic and engaging experience. It also gives the player a much more substantial task to manage, despite it being less logical.
