It should be important to know that this is one of the features added by Integrated Commonwealth, aFallout 4mod that attempts to seamlessly implement DLC content into the base game.
A popularFallout 4theory that circulated in its community at launch was that the Sole Survivor was a synth themselves, planted by the Institute to infiltrate and take control of the Commonwealth.
