AnElden Ringplayer shows off a helpful trick to keep the game’s Monstrous Dog enemies at bay. This will undoubtedly come in handy for any players having trouble battling these giant mutated hounds or who simply want to explore Caelid without the beasts snapping at their heels.
FromSoftware’s open-world dark fantasy action RPGElden Ringlaunched a little over one year ago in February 2022. The challenging action game proved to be a massive hit, withElden Ringselling well over 13 million copies just one month after release, enjoying Metacritic scores of 94 on PC and 96 on consoles. Players take the role of one of the Tarnished, undead warriors drawn to the cursed realm known as the lands between. Players adventure across large, bleakly beautiful landscapes battling tragically horrific monsters as they collect the pieces of the titular Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.

Said horrific monsters include the giant Monstrous Dogs players will encounter throughoutElden Ring’s Caelid region. Large, fast, and aggressive, these beasts can be difficult forElden Ringplayers to evade. Fortunately, Reddit user cheflajohn recently demonstrated that Monstrous Dogs are not immune toElden Ring’s Beast-Repellent Torch, which prevents the Dogs from attacking. He proved this in a short video uploaded to Reddit, which clearly shows that holding up the torch is enough to keep the beast at bay.
Elden Ring’s Monstrous Dogsare much larger than their normal-sized brethren, possessing disproportionately small forelegs and oversized rear legs. These creatures are also extremely aggressive and fast enough to catch up with the player, even on horseback. However, while using the Beast-Repellent Torch won’t scare them off entirely, it can giveElden Ringplayers some much-needed breathing room while battling these fearsome creatures. It even works when players are wielding their weapon with two hands.
Players who want to try this trick can buy the Beast-Repellent Torch for 1200 Runes from the Isolated Merchant inElden Ring’s Dragonbarrow location. They will find him at the Isolated merchant’s shack in the westernmost corner of southern Dragonbarrow, almost directly between the Devine Tower of Caelid and Caelid’s Minor Erdtree.Elden RingPlayers will likely encounter at least a few monstrous dogs before they get to him, but the item is valuable enough that it’s worth the effort to reach.
Note, however, that the Beast-Repellent Torch is not guaranteed to work on all ofElden Ring’s Monstrous Dogs. As someElden Ringplayers on Reddit pointed out, the white-furred and red-eyed variant is more than happy to munch on the Tarnished regardless. All the monstrous dogs inElden Ring’s Mountaintops of the Giantsignore the torch’s pacifying effects. Still, Beast-Repellent Torch we’ll come in handy for most of the ones players encounter in the game.
