AnElden Ringplayer completes an impressive challenge as they are able to defeat the difficult boss Malenia, Blade of Miquella, using only an unupgraded melee weapon at level 1. AsElden Ringcontinues to be played, more builds are tested on the notoriously tough boss, trying to see just what it can take to defeat her. For some players, it can be an overpowered magic build that takes her down before she can move, while others try to be a little more creative with their consumables. However, some players just like to see how skilled they can be without any level increases.

Malenia is the toughest boss fight in the entire game, known for taking someElden Ringplayers over 300 times to defeather. Her boss fight takes place after traversing the grueling legacy dungeon that is Miquella’s Haligtree. Malenia pulls no punches when the player takes her on, coming in quick with a flurry of slashes that never seem to end, one combo able to easily kill any player that doesn’t take caution. And when that’s over, she transitions into a second phase, known as Malenia, Goddess of Rot, which adds Scarlet Rot alongside her attacks. For many players, fighting her head-on with just an average melee weapon can be quite tough.

However, that’s what one player decided to try out, fighting against Malenia using an unupgraded melee weapon at the starting level of 1. In a video posted to Reddit, user gilfordtan showcased their full-length fight against Malenia as a level 1 character using a Vulgar Militia Saw with no upgrades. By itself, the Vulgar Militia Saw does 126 physical attack damage, which is fine overall at level 1, but what’s most important is the fact that the Vulgar Milita Saw gives Blood Loss buildup, which Malenia is weak to. Most blood-related builds utilizeElden Ring’s potent Rivers of Blood Katana, but the Vulgar Militia Saw is good for this purpose as well.

After repeated uses of the weapon that cause Blood Loss, it triggers an effect called Hemorrhage, which does a percentage of the affected’s Max HP. The player relies on this massive loss of health coupled with well-timed dodges, parries, and uses of the Impaling Thrust, one ofElden Ring’s Ashes of War that sends their enemy flying. They know all of Malenia’s moves for the best times to attack to get that Hemorrhage effect in, whittling her health down until both phases are defeated, ending the video by showing they were indeed level 1.

As long as Malenia keeps being the hardest boss inElden Ring, which may change with the upcoming DLC, there are sure to be more people trying to take her down in as many ways as possible, whether it’s an unupgraded Vulgar Militia Saw or anoverpowered Mimic Tear. All this does is show how, with enough willpower and know-how, it is possible to take downElden Ring’s biggest challenge.

Elden Ringis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
