One of the most interesting, and perhaps necessary, parts ofElden Ringis the riding system. After a short time in-game, players gain the ability to summon Torrent,Elden Ring’s player horse, in the open world. Riding Torrent vastly speeds up exploration and can lead players to locations normally inaccessible with his vertically-oriented moveset.

Players don’t startElden Ringwith the ability to summon Torrent, but he can be acquired very soonafter leaving the tutorial areaand entering the open world. Summoning Torrent requires players to first get a special summoning item. Unlike the Soul Summon Bell, though, the Horse Whistle can be used anywhere in the Lands Between except for dungeons and other interiors.
How To Get Torrent In The First Place
Before being able to summon Torrent, players will have to get through the first few sub-areas ofLimgrave, thefirst major open-worldzone inElden Ring. When players find their third Lost Grace (usually the one behind a large encampment of Soldiers before a large gate), a cutscene will play introducing them toMelina.
This Maidenof uncertain originasks the player for an accord - that the Tarnished will take them to the foot of the Erd Tree in exchange for turning “runes into strength”. At the end of this cutscene, players are introduced to Torrent and given the Spectral Steed Whistle. This item is what players use to mount and dismount Torrent in the overworld.
How To Summon (And Dismiss) Torrent
Go into your equipment screen once you have theSpectral Steed Whistleand look at the bottom foryour quickselect item slots. You should see yourFlask of Crimson TearsandFlask of Cerulean Tearsin the first two slots. Find an empty slot, open it, andequip the Spectral Steed Whistle. After this, scroll to the Whistle bypressing down on the D-pad until it is selected.
Just like with using any other “consumable” item inElden Ring,press X (or Square) to use the Whistle. Summoning Torrentis extremely fast, and players can get up to max speed in only a few seconds. When facing fast opponents, or when the odds are overwhelmingly against you in the open world, don’t be afraid to pull out the Whistle and run away. To dismiss Torrent, you can either use the Whistle again or press down on the left joystick (L3) while mounted.
