Dragon Age: Inquisitionwriter David Gaider has shared details about a cut scene that would’ve killed off fan-favorite character Varrick. Once again, his posts provided an intriguing glance behind the scenes of the creative process that goes into making an epic RPG likeDragon Age: Inquisition.
This is not the first time David Gaider has treated fans to information aboutcontent that was cut fromDragon Age: Inquisition. Previously, he talked about a playable post-credit scene that would’ve shown the Inquisitor, or Morrigan, stuck in a difficult and even heart-breaking situation between Flemeth and Solas. Only a simplified version made it into the final product, which removed the personal impact it could’ve had for either the Inquisitor or Morrigan. But the new scene he talked about likely would’ve caused even more heartbreak among fans.

In a Twitter thread, Gaider revealed that Corypheus was supposed to attack Skyhold before the end-game, likely sometime after the temple of Mythal scenes. He said it was a decision that was difficult to accept at the time, but its absence was likely not noticed in the final game. The choice to cut the attack was made quite early on, so not a lot of work was lost over it according to Gaider, and the reason for it was very simple. Skyhold already proved to be a complicated piece of work with a lot of moving parts, and variables like upgrades and characters moving around, therefore to keep both those details and the attack in the game seemed impossible. Through this Gaider also revealed the Skyhold upgrades originally would’ve had function too, not just cosmetic value. It would’ve also raised Corypheus' threat leveland the death of Varric would’ve added to the impact.
“That dwarf was meant to die in the (canceled) DA2 expansion and escaped his fate despite having been in my crosshairs ever since,” Gaider explained, and likely many fans breathed a sigh of relief knowing those scenes never came to pass. The only regret he had when it came to removing this scene was Corypheus becoming more of a distant villain who after Haven wasn’t a direct threat to the Inquisitor. What this example also shows are the many moving parts that need to be considered while creating a gameon the scale ofDragon Age: Inquisition.
David Gaider’s revelations aboutDragon Age: Inquisition’s development are very interesting, but they also bring up further questions. Knowing how many times Varric escaped death, fans may be wondering if thedwarf will be killed off inDragon Age: Dreadwolf.
