2016’s revitalization of theDoomfranchise saw old fans rejoice and new fans born, and the hype train did not slow for even an instant untilDoom Eternalwas finally released. People have fallen in love with every aspect of the demon-slaying series, and their tributes range all the way from fan animations toreal-life Doomblades.
Speedrunners routinely find game-breaking bugs and glitches in an effort to discover the fastest route through a game from beginning to end. Back when it came out,Doomwas made famous among the speedrunning community very quickly for the numerous ways players could go out of bounds to skip enormous portions of the game outright, andDoom Eternalhas followed in its predecessor’s footsteps as a speedrun darling.

Naturally, it was not long before speedrunners discovered how to break the boundaries ofDoom Eternal. While players were sure they had already foundevery secret and easter eggDoom Eternalhad to offer, it turns out there was one more hidden away, one that players were not meant to see. In the Mars Core level nearer the end of the game, there is a secret teleport room originally intended for the developers.
The helpfully titled “Dev Teleporter Room” is found at the beginning of Mars Core, specifically by touching the door the Doom Guy walks through at the cutscene that opens the level. The area with the door can only be reached by going out of bounds, but that is no longer a problem for anyone attempting a speedrun. The fact that the room has a teleport pad for every part of the level means players can skip over the lengthy platform sections and cutscenes that make up Mars Core, which helps make reachingDoom Eternal’s endinga breeze.
Further aiding speedrunners, or anyone else who decides to break into the dev teleport chamber, is the fact that the room contains an unscripted BFG 9000 pickup far earlier than players are supposed to get the gun. This access to one of themost powerful weapons inDoom Eternalis particularly important to speedrunners, as some routes will skip the normal, lengthy process to get the gun entirely.
As for the devs who originally used the room, they know that it is being used by speedrunners and don’tt seem to disapprove. Several people who worked on the game were invited to see one of the firstDoom Eternalspeedruns at GDQ and found the discovery hilarious. The explanations for the room’s inclusion were largely lost amidst general laughter as Doom Guy proceeded to blast right past some of thetoughest enemies inDoom Eternalwithout breaking a sweat, largely thanks to a little, unassuming room that no one was supposed to find.
Doom Eternalis available for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
